When fire spreads, flames and harmful gases spread through a building. If properly fireblocked, the movement of flames and gases is restricted and the fire can not easily spread through concealed passages that may Page 1 be present in the framing of a building. The building code requires fireblocking in the following locations: In concealed spaces of stud walls and partitions Inspector’s At all interconnections between concealed vertical and horizontal spaces such as occur at soffits, Corner drop ceilings and cove ceilings In concealed spaces between stair stringers at the top and bottom of the run Page 11 At openings around vents, pipes, and ducts at ceilings and floor level Comprehensive At open spaces around chimneys and fireplaces, such as floor and ceiling penetrations Plan Update Materials approved as fireblocking are listed in section 602.8.1, of the Residential Building Code. Approved mate- rials include 2 inch thick nominal lumber, ½” gypsum board, and ¼” cement based millboard. For more informa- tion regarding fireblocking, firestopping, or other code related issues, contact the City of College Station Building Department @ 979-764-3570.
