Much of this material was collected from the Cushing Memorial Library Arid Archives by Justin Curtsiriger
as an uriderg red uate in classes taught by Professor David G_ Woodcock in Fall 2005 acid continued as
persorial research in the Cushing Library duri rig the time Curtsir�ger was a graduate student in
Architecture (M Arches 2010) also under the directio ri of Professor Woodcock_ Cu rtsiriger's perso real

The 1938 Map is in the collectio r-� in the Gushing Memorial Library and Archives, as are the origi—al
photographs sca ri rigid onto these CD-ROMs_ The 1985 study of The Old Campus Houses of Texas ABM
was ur�derta ken by Dr_ Paul van Riper in 1985 as part of the Texas Bicerite r�riial Celebratio r-�_ His use of
t Fie Cushirig Archive s perso real irate rviews of people who had lived in the area, and cross-refe re r.ce to
the highly-a rinotated 1938 Map mentioned above, re pre ser-�ts the most thorough aria lysis of campus
housir-�g and its gradual migratio r-� i—to the community from the late 1930s through the early 1950s_

• This map has both temporary mess hall built after the old Mess Hall fire and shows Sbisa Dining
Hall
• The Academic Quadrangle now includes: Academic Building, Ross and Foster Halls,and the Civil
and Electrical Engineering Buildings
• The YMCA is shown with a new road in front
• The Interurban to Bryan extends to the front of the YMCA
• The Drill Field Neighborhood has developed with four streets: Lubbock, Clark, Runnels and
Murrah
• Two railroad depots: International and Great Northern and Houston and Texas Central
• A note in the top of right indicates that"not all buildings are owned by the college"
• Northside Neighborhood has spread along the west curve of the main entrance
• The map has housing numbers, street names, and building names
• The campus is growing east

• This map has names for streets and buildings, including identification of houses
• The Bryan and College Interurban Railroad has changed location
• Major additions to campus include: Bizzell Hospital, Guion Hall, Francis Hall, Gymnasium, Physics
Building,Agriculture Building(now Glasscock Building),the Pavilion,and A&M Consolidated
High School
• The Military Science Building and Guion Hall replace part of Quality Row(the brick homes)
• Murrah Street is replaced by the Drill Field Neighborhood
• There is a developed 'workers' living area
• Hollywood (the small wooden barrack buildings that replaced the tents)exists west of the YMCA
• There is even more eastward development
• The north point is not accurate

Population is 3,000, including 1,500 students; water facilities include four deep wells;the Fire
Department is manned by the cadets

Location: Evans and Cushing Collection in the Sanders Corps Center
• The best and most complete map for the period. It has a missing portion in lower left corner
• The map shows the dramatic shift in entrance experience from the railroad to the automobile
with the construction of Highway 6 and the New Main entrance road
• College Park is developing south of campus
• Kyle Field is built,with the first horse shoe stand
• Hart Hall replaces the Old Chapel/Armory Building, Law, Puryear and Walton Hall are built
• There is no Interurban railroad
• The map shows the development of land around the campus to south and east. This will
become College Station in 1938

• Shows location of un-numbered faculty houses and the location of the first faculty
neighborhood nicknamed "Quality Row" and the beginning of the second and third
neighborhoods
• Traced from a 1904 map and updated to show 1912 campus
• Date appears to ne two months before Old Main burned, and shows the outline of Old Main
• The Sul Ross House(President's House) is shown by itself on the north side of the campus. This
house burned in the 1960s and Lechner Hall erected on its site
• The map shows two railroad depots at the Old Main entrance to campus
• The Bryan and College Interurban stops at Gathright Hall (an 1876 building contemporaneous
with Old Main
• The map shows the extent of college buildings
