HomeMy WebLinkAboutHARVELL - BRISON PARK SUPPORT LETTER/ To Texas Recreation & Parks Society From: Linda Harvell, CTP, CTIS, College Station City Council Place 3 lharvell@cstx.gov – 979-571-5800 Date September 30, 2024 Re: Brison Park – Lone Star Legacy Park Award Greetings from College Station! This is such an honor to be advocating for the Lone Star Legacy Park Award for my childhood park, Brison Park, located in the Southside Historical Neighborhood of College Station. My family bought my home in 1954, just two blocks from Brison Park, and we neighborhood kids grew up playing there, climbing the trees, running across Billy Goat Bridge and just having fun. After retirement, my husband and I renovated my childhood home…and we are still just two blocks from Brison Park. As a City Council member, I have witnessed firsthand the importance of this park to the residents of the Southside Neighborhood who work tirelessly to protect the character of their neighborhood and its special Brison Park sanctuary. In 2019, the College Station City Council approved Southside’s request for a “Neighborhood Conservation Overlay” zoning and has recently also approved a city grant for planting native plants and trees in the Brison Native Garden. The Southside residents’ dedication to wildlife conservation and preservation of natural habitats in this park is outstanding. Being so close to the A&M campus, there are many student residents who enjoy the park…whether it’s playing catch with their dogs, setting up a picnic or just sitting back and visiting with their friends. Brison Park also has a sidewalk around the perimeter of the entire park which makes it very popular for pedestrians, joggers, families pushing strollers or walking their animals. It’s an extremely visitor-friendly park that welcomes all demographics of residents and visitors and remains one of the most popular parks in College Station. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. Brison Park has been near and dear to my heart for seventy years and truly deserves the honor of being designated as a Lone Star Legacy Park.
