BOX 12276 AUSTIN, TEXAS 78711 TEL. NO. (512) 463 -6096 July 21, 1991 Dear Sir/Madam: As part of the 300th Anniversary of the Old San Antonio Road, the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) has designed InfoBoards to inform the travelling public about the corridor of old roads that we call "the Old San Antonio Road." The boards will be placed in free - standing units at several locations along the Old San Antonio Road corridor between Milam, Texas (near Louisiana) and south Texas. Brochures that provide further details about the old road and its history will also be made available to local communities by the SDHPT. A number of communities and historic associations have expressed an interest in purchasing only the InfoBoard itself, and the SDHPT has agreed to make it available to governments, counties, and/or associations or commissions. (It may not be purchased by individuals.) Cost of the board (without the free- standing unit) will be $32.80 plus shipping. The boards can be mounted on a building wall or placed in another display stand. Clearly the boards can assist your community in promoting itself and its history. If your community, county, heritage society, etc. is interested in the purchase of a board, please return the attached form to Pete Haight by September 15. You will be billed for the board in September, 1991. This is a one -time only opportunity. Sincerely, 1 /:k- E 7 ti c Archie Mc oval t , ' h.D. Beachy 1101 Neal Pickett Drive College Station, Texas 77840 Dear Mr. and Mrs. Beachy: This year 1991 is the 300th anniversary of the first use of the El Camino Real or Old San Antonio Road, which passes through Texas from Mexico to Louisiana and part of which forms the boundary between Brazos and Robertson counties. In order to recognize the importance of this historic road, the Texas Legislature established the Old San Antonio Road Preservation Commission. This commission has worked with the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation and numerous county t. historical commissions to organize a caravan to travel through the parts of the state traversed by the road with stops in each of the counties. The caravan will be in Brazos and Robertson Counties on April 16, 1991. Events planned for the day include rededication of historical markers at Benchley at 9:30 a.m., tour of exhibits and slide show on history of Brazos County at the Brazos Center at 10:45 a.m., a catered barbeque lunch at the Brazos Center at noon, and a tour and reception at Calvert in the afternoon. You are invited to attend any or all of these activities. I am enclosing a separate invitation to the barbeque lunch since there is a charge for that event. If you plan to attend the barbeque lunch please send your registration and check to me by April 8, 1991. Your check should be payable to the Brazos County Historical Commission.
