Woodcock, FAIA Professor of Architecture 3137 TAMU College of Architecture Texas A &M University College Station, TX 77843 -3137 Dear Dr. Woodcock: The City of College Station commends you and your Introduction to Historic Preservation (ARCH 446) class for the excellent research and reporting skills demonstrated during the recent historic preservation class project. Thank you for collaborating with City staff in offering your students a class project that not only broadened your students understanding of historic preservation, but also furthered the City's initiative to document pertinent information regarding College Station's oldest structures. The students' reports on eleven (11) of College Station's historic homes and churches will serve to teach us of our community's formative years. These reports will be digitally scanned into the City's Project HOLD: Historic Online Library Database, which is available for viewing on the City's web site www.cstx.gov. The City of College Station cherishes its relationship with Texas A &M University faculty and students. When students complete professional projects that contribute to our community's goals and objectives, it serves to give us assurance that the students of today will contribute brilliantly to our future. Thank you for your commitment to the students of Texas A &M University and to the community of College Station. Yours sincerely, eat .Kw/ Ron Silvia Katie Elrod Mayor Neighborhood Services cc: J. '' TEXAS A &M UNIVERSITY W A` College of Architecture .,' .,1 Historic Resources Imaging Laboratory 10 December 2004 The Honorable Ron Silvia, Mayor City of College Station P.O. Box 9960 College Station, TX 77842 Dear Mayor Silvia, Thank you for your very gracious letter concerning the work of the ARCH 446 Introduction to Historic Preservation class, and the kind reception you and the members of Council gave to us at the meeting on 9 December 2004. I will be sure to share both with the entire class. I would like to acknowledge the work of Ms. Katie Elrod who gave another outstanding lecture to the class on the role of local government in preservation planning, and returned for a second class period to present the HOLD program and prepare the students to undertake the work with building owners. The advance planning that goes into this project is extraordinary, and Katie, with Staff Planner Lindsay Boyer and Intern Elizabeth Spring have earned my lasting respect and appreciation. They demonstrate city service at its best. There are too few opportunities for genuine town and gown interaction, and I feel fortunate to teach in field where this is a natural, and mutually beneficial component. I have heard for students in previous classes who note this project as a turning point of their understanding of local government, and the value of community service. Please share my gratitude with the members of Council. Sincerely, David G.
