HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/01/2010 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee December 2, 2010 MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, November 1, 2010 College Station Conference Center 1300 George Bush Drive, Room 103 College Station, Texas 77840 4:00 pm Attendance: Earl Apgar, Pat Cleere, Louis Hodges, Susan Irza, James McGinnis, Meredith Waller, Approved Absence: Libby Vastano, Ernie Wright Unapproved Absence: Hillary Jessup Staff Attendance: Anne Boykin, Heritage Programs Coordinator Visitors: Linda Harvell, HPC membership pending Council approval Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Earl Apgar at 4:08 p.m. Agenda Item #2-3: Hear Visitors: Linda Harvell is our member-in-waiting for council approval. Agenda Item #4: Possible action and discussion on absence requests. Meredith emailed her excuse. Agenda Item #5: Possible action and discussion to approve meeting minutes of regular meeting of June 7, 2010. Minutes were approved as written. (JM/lh) Agenda Item #6: Possible action and discussion on vacancy left by the resignation of Anne Triche-Steen. Linda Harvell’s appointment has been on the Council Agenda for several months but the item has been continually postponed due to the length of the council meetings. It should happen this month. Agenda Item #7: Possible action and discussion on The Annex building. Earl has requested a meeting with Chuck Gilman to discuss the future of The Annex. Members reviewed the marker application submitted on behalf of the HPC by Anne. Patricia Cleere has taken photographs of the current building. Meredith Waller made the motion to approve the application. Lou Hodges seconded. Marker application was approved unanimously. (MW/lh) Agenda Item #8: Report from HPC Chairperson. Earl reminded members of our booth commitment at Worldfest. Agenda Item #9: Report from Heritage Programs Coordinator. No separate report at this time. City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee December 2, 2010 Agenda Item #10: Report on 75th Anniversary plans. The next meeting of the 75th Anniversary Planning Committee is Nov. 19 at 8:00 a.m. Earl does not feel that we should piggyback on Brazos Valley Worldfest for the 75th Anniversary. The new Donning Publishing Company rep, Jim Rainey will meet with Anne, Earl and Glenn Davis on Friday, Nov. 12, 11:30am. James offered information on forming a 501 (c) 3. Earl mentioned working through the Brazos Valley Foundation for funding. Susan did not recommend it due to prior experience with Brazos Valley foundation through another organization. Agenda Item #11: Committee Reports: • Development – Susan Irza Interviews are being scheduled with all but Mayors White, Silvia and McIlhaney due to pending legal cases yet to be resolved. Susan has written the questions that she will use in the interviews and has sent advance copies to the interviewees. Some of the mayors have requested to view their interviews. • Native American Interpretive Path – Ernie Wright, Patricia Cleere No report at this time. • Historic Markers Program – Meredith Waller Linda, Hillary and Karan Chavis have homes on the BCS Sister Cities Historic Homes Tour, Dec. 7. The HPC members will assist as docents. • Oral History Project – Lou Hodges Lou reported on the Hot Rocks Cook Off. Two Native American tribes and students from A&M and Texas State participated. About 250 people were involved through the 3 day event. • PR/Communications/Sponsorships – James McGinnis James will be coordinating the booth at Brazos Valley Worldfest on Saturday Nov. 13. Members of the HPC will take turns in the booth. Anne will print a small promotional card to hand out about Heritage Programs. Members will sign up to work shifts at the booth. • Landmark Commission (Liaison) – Hillary Jessup In Hillary’s absence, Earl reported that he has been appointed the HPC liaison to the Landmark Commission. • Educational Initiatives/School Activities – Libby Vastano No report at this time. • Exploring History Lunch Lectures – Earl Apgar All but a few of the guest lecturers have been contacted. Anne will have a new Exploring History brochure ready in time for the January luncheon. So far, the lectures are: Jan. – Dean Edwin J. Kyle; Barbara Althaus Feb. – Images of America: College Station; Glenn D. Davis Mar. – Camp Hearne; Cathy Lazarus Apr. – FBI Agent Bob Wiatt; Bill Harper May – Veterans Park; Gen. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting.
