me," he said.
Reeh was still a teenager when
he was sworn into the Army for
World War II on V -E Day, the day
Germany surrendered. So when
the Korean War started, the
Army called him back to service.
He was sent to the Army school
of watchmaking in Maryland.
There, he learned even more
about watches, including "a lot of
theory."
The Army school isn't the only
one he's been to during the years.
He's had to keep up with all the
technical changes in watches.
Reeh said he's worked through
the most innovative times for
watchmakers.
When he first started, every
timepiece had the conventional
winding mechanism. In the late
1940s and early 1950s, the self-

ones.
In 1958, Hamilton introduced
the first battery wristwatch.
"That thing was so accurate
the railroads accepted a wrist-
watch for the first time," he said.
And it was the downfall for the
pocket watch.
About 1960, Bulova invented
the Accutron, with a battery
charging a tuning fork. It was
accurate to a minute a month,
Reeh said. The U.S. space pro-
gram used the Accutron, he said.
Then, about 1977, the quartz
watch came out with a tiny
quartz crystal sealed in a small
metal tube.
