VOLUME I City of College Station Parks and Recreation Department June 1, 2011 Dear Friends of History, I am willing to bet that I am not the only one who listened in to “Big John
and Sparky,” “Sky King,” “Hi! Ho! Silver, away!” There are probably even more of you who listened to “The Shadow,” Glenn Miller, Edward R. Murrow or Walter Winchell. Radio played a big
part in our lives then and still does whether you listen in to Talk Radio, Aggie sports, news, weather or your favorite tunes. Our program this month has a few surprises! “WTAW – An
Early Radio History” The Infomaniacs: Scott Delucia, Chace Murphy, & Tom Turbiville with Special Guest Jay Socol, Communications Director for City of College Station Wednesday, June

the Conference Center New Faces in Heritage Programs You know the old saying, “Be careful what you pray for.…” Additional help is on the way for Heritage Programs. We recently added
Haley Joines and Luis Rodriguez, both TAMU students, as interns in the Heritage Programs office. To handle the extra hands we have another scanner on order. No, we aren’t going for the
Guinness World Record on how many people, scrapbooks, scanners, and boxes you can cram into a city office. What we are going for is triple the scanning effort, a significant reduction
in boxes of “Things to Be Scanned” and a major organizational effort led by Tina Hanna, our volunteer. Haley (’12) is from Granbury and is working on her BS in Recreation, Parks, and
Tourism Sciences. She is also working on certification in Event Planning and will be with us through December. Haley will be working on our oral history binders and helping with the
Hot Rocks Cook Off this Fall. Luis (’12) is from Amarillo and spent the first 17 summers of his life in the Dominican Republic. Last summer he was a Senate Messenger at the Capitol in
Austin. He is working toward a BA in Political Science and will be with us through July. Luis is scanning in our city government news articles and learning a lot about our history. Welcome!

75th Anniversary Celebration REMEMBERING D-DAY 6 JUNE 1944 “I saw the beach, with a huge seawall, at the foot of a massive 150 foot bluff. An 88 millimeter shell landed right in
the middle of the LCA on the side of us, and splinters of the boat, equipment and bodies were thrown into the air. The ramp was lowered and the unit door was opened and a German machine
gun trained on the opening and took a heavy toll of lives. I waded through the waist-deep water watching many of my buddies fall alongside of me. I expected a bullet to rip through me
at any moment, from the right. I reached the stone wall. I looked down and being washed around by the incoming water. I saw the bodies of my buddies who had tried in vain to clear the
beach.” Comments on D-Day from a World War II veteran. Lt. Col. James Earl Rudder, AMC '32, and his 2nd Ranger Battalion (photo below) spearheaded the Allied invasion of Normandy on
D-Day, June 6, 1944. The Rangers’ tasks were to neutralize the six 155-mm guns overlooking Omaha and Utah beaches from Point du Hoc. See more photos on Project HOLD. Flags are flown
at full staff on this day. Look for fun hyperlinks throughout this page!
