My heart goes out to the entire College Station, Texas community and the students and families of Texas

time. I pray that they find some solace and comfort in God's loving arms.

Many thoughts crossed my mind when I heard about the accident at Texas A&M. First, I am sorry about
the loss of the students and the grief this will cause their families. These students were in the prime of
their life and had a great future in front of them. It is societies loss.
-This sports celebration is way out of hand. A stack of tree trunks higher than 40ft! Students go to college
to learn. Sport events seem more important a tradition. Your campus is not the only one having problems
with this type of sports culture. It is not healthy for adults to place so much importance on a game.
Especially, fail and neglect courses to participate.
-How about environmental issues? They can't find a use for that many cut trees? They have to burn them
and pollute. These students are learning to waste resources.
-It is a safety hazard. As a child you learn even the smallest fire can be dangerous. I guess, there were no
Boy Scouts at the university. I'm surprised a disaster hasn't happened before now. This large fire can not
be easily controlled by firemen. Ashes and embers can travel great distance if wind exists.
-Moral for other citizens: don't hire engineers from Texas A&M. Your building or bridge will fall. They don't
have a clue as to what is safe.

I am a firm believer in the fact that bonfire is a tradition that needs to
be continued for years to come. Bonfire shoulddd be the unification of
Aggies across the land. Any talk about ending bonfire should end up on deaf
ears because it is not the purely the fact of the matter, as much as a
tradition that has withstood the test of time. I think that in memory of
the people that gave their lives for this goal should be compensated by at
least lighting the bonfire. Wild as it may be, these people gave their
lives to build this monument to tradition. I think it would be a tragedy if
all these people that died would never have the candle which they started
never be burned on the A&M campus. I think that in rememberance of them I
say we burn that bastard to the ground in the name of all of those who died
building thhis monument to the spirit of the Aggie Spirit

I spoke to my daughter, a sophomore, at Texas A& M early this morning. She thankfully, is okay and so is
my nephew, a freshman there. Bad things can and do happen to good people. I know our family is praying
for all those injured and for the families of those killed. Life is short and we must all live as if each day is
our last. Unfortunately, those young people that were killed today had no idea that they would go out into
eternity in the early morning hours of today's date. Let no one ever forget their names or their memories.
May God heal all the broken hearts there in College Station and elsewhere. May this terrible, terrible
tragedy turn people's hearts back to God. KarenCauthen, Port Arthur, Texas

Please extend our condolences to everyone; I attended TAMU for 2 years and, having lived in this special
community, can imagine how these close-knit people have been shaken by the tragedy. I have been so
depressed and totally unable to get any work done today, since I heard at about 9:00 this morning.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all -- the victims, the families of those who died or are injured, the
students, the residents of CST. I am glad to have this site to check for news, as the story will undoubtedly
leave the front page headlines long before I have fully dealt with it. Thanks for updating the site as you

Over the last two days, City of College Station employees have demonstrated to our community once
again why you are among the best!!! I want to thank all of you for your response, involvement and
participation (whether it was direct or indirect) in dealing with this week's Bonfire accident. It has been
said that amidst the horrific nature of a tragedy like this, that the best in people quickly surfaces and that
certainly can be said for all of you.
Whether you were on the Bonfire site, in the EOC, on the phone answering citizen questions, you all
played a vital role. I want to thank you for your heart felt response, professionalism, and community
commitment. I have received nothing but high praise from all parts of the community about College
Station's response to this terrible event. The Mayor and Council want me to let you know how well they
thought we did in dealing with this and how much they appreciate every employee's response to this
situation.
It is an honor to serve with you. You make me very proud to call myself a City of College Station

I just wanted to let everyone know how proud we, the council, are of this staff. I have heard over and
over again how professional and caring the staff and community have been in responding to the tragedy. I
was out of town yesterday at a meeting and had to try to answer questions from community leaders
across the state. Our emergency team kept me informed every two hours as to the progress of the
rescue, which helped me keep others informed of the facts. I witnessed the calm straight forward
approach to the media from our staff and how their professionalism helped keep people focused on the
job ahead. I know this will take time to sort through and deal with. What I want everyone to know is that
we are all here for each of you and together we will find the strength to move beyond yesterday. Thank
you, staff and council for representing the best our community has to offer. In difficult times, I am
comforted by knowing that I live in a community and serve with a staff and council that truly understand
community service and dedicate their time and effort to be prepared for and can respond to a tragedy like
this with such professionalism and strength. Thank you again, Lynn Mcllhaney, Mayor, Larry Mariott,

I know that colleges have certain things that they carry on from year to year. I have tried to find the
purpose of this bonfire that started in 1909, but at least then was started with trash. Evidently the 1936
bonfire was started using the first non-stolen material which I guess means prior to that it was stolen.
It is very tragic that these young people lost their lives because of some tradition. What I would like to
know when you talk about 7000 logs that looked like quite long and round enough to get some good
lumber out of, I have a hard time understanding why this valuable product couldn't be used to build some
nice houses for poor people and the labor estimated at 125,000 would build lots of homes. It seems such
a waste to just burn up these 7000 logs that probably are worth between 50,000 as firewood for heating
homes or$200,000 for lumber (each year.) The labor could be used for many things to better our country
and help the many poor and elderly people in this world even around College Station.
Again I am praying for the families of these young people. But I also would pray that these resourse of
labor and lumber would be used for something more beneficial than a bonfire
Sincerely

My heart goes out to everyone touched by this horrible accident. I used to
live in Houston and Katy, my sister lived in Bryan for a time. I worked in
Rockdale for a year and traveled back and forth, going through Bryan/College
Station to see my sister. I've taken classes at the campus through Shell Oil
Company where I was then employed. Beautiful campus. It was much easier for
me to "become an Aggie" than a self-appointed alumni of any other university in
Texas.
I'm from West Virginia, home of Marshall University, alma mater of Randy Moss
of the Minnesota Vikings. Several years ago, Marshall lost nearly its entire
football team in a plane crash as they returned home from a game. As I keep up
with the news of this tragedy via the Internet, it brings back the shock and
heartache from that accident. God bless and sustain everyone who has been
effected by this -- not to forget the fortunate survivors. God was certainly
watching out for them that day!!!
The nation's prayers are with you all.

Dear Mayor Rimsza:
I have received several phone calls and a-mails from individuals who are concerned and
upset about the editorial cartoon drawn by Steve Benson and printed in the Arizona
Republic.
L
As Mayor, you know how important it is to support your community when tragedy .
occurs. We have received so many letters, calls and support from across the country
helping us deal with this situation; yet, this editorial cartoon upset and sorrowed so many
who are trying to come to terms with what happened.
I know everyone expects the Mayor to solve everything and that is not your job; however,
I was wondering if you would be so kind as to forward this letter and attachment to the
Arizona Republic along with your support for an apology. Losing a child is difficult for
anyone, and the community has lost twelve. Please know we are hurting and ask only for
your prayers and support during this time of healing.
I thank you in advance for your consideration of my request.

What were they thinking?
his letter is to express my extreme
outrage against the "political" car-
toon by Steve Benson that ran in the
Arizona Republic on Nov. 19. Benson's car-
toon compared the tragic accident at Texas
A&M to the Branch Davidian fire in Waco
and the racist murder in Jasper.
What were the editors thinking in run-
ning that cartoon?Have they no sense of
taste? Where is their sense of ethics? How
could they connect these events?
Twelve very fine young people gave their
lives doing something they believed in —
the Arizona Republic and its editors don't
get it.
I am currently serving our country and
have done so ever since graduating from
Texas A&M in 1986. I also have a master's
degree in journalism from American
University in Washington, D.C. What the
Arizona Republic has shown by its actions
is why the American public holds the
media in such low regard.
J
I wonder what Sen. John McCain's
thoughts were when he saw this poor
excuse for journalism?I wonder if he
thought about the numerous Texas Aggies
who fought alongside him and risked their
lives to save him?I wonder if he shed a
tear knowing America just lost 12 of its
finest?
In closing, I must say that being an Aggie
is unlike anything Benson and his editors
have ever experienced. It is not just "Aggie
Spirit"—it's a way of life and a way of liv-
ing. Being an Aggie largely defines who we
are—A&M is not just another university,
it goes much deeper. We all are feeling -
unspeakable grief right now, but this will
pass and we will learn.
In the end, this lesson will make that
Aggie bond even stronger. We have no G-
choice. But the editors did have a choice in ,
running that cartoon, and they failed. J 0 -
JACK L. TODD, '86
Take some responsibility
W
hat has happened to the desire of
reporters, editors, and cartoonists
to seek to understand a situation—
the facts surrounding not only an event,
but the history of an event. t
People claim that TV is eroding our soci-
ety, our compassion, and our culture. I
think that the Arizona Republic's editors,
cartoonist, and staff have demonstrated
that there is no compassion or desire for
understanding within their organization.
They have finally stooped to the level of a
tabloid.
I just hope that they are not a part of a
trend. Shame on them. They should seek
decency, sensitivity and understanding, for
it would appear that they have lost all
three. I would hope that they do not repre-
sent Phoenix or the state of Arizona when
their paper publishes cartoons in the same
way. They should take some responsibility
for their actions.

I am not a Texan by birth or am A&M Fan ( My son goes to Tech) but
the cartoon that Steve Benson displayed in the Arizona Republic was very
disturbing. He has not sent an appology as yet even though the editor
did take the cartoon off the web site. The damage was still done and 1
really feel for not just the parents but the close friends and other
Aggies that may have seen such a display of NON-Emotions. As Mayor of

least appolgize to the Student body as well as the State of Texas and

My deepest prayers are with the families and the students of TAMU
that have been shattered by this horrific tragedy. While I was a
student at TAMU, it seemed like the language of books was
paramount. But, each November, I could feel the excitement go
through the campus as the student body gathered at the bonfire to
show our strength and solidarity. I do not know what the future will
hold for the tradition of the bonfire, but at this most difficult of
times, please know the depth of the compassion and support that the
Alumni holds in it's heart for you. Brenda TAMU Class of 83

Subject: employment question
Dear Eric,
Thank you for your comments. You are absolutely correct...sometimes we have just a few jobs on our job
list, and at other times, we may have 20 openings. The list changes daily as we fill positions, or someone
leaves. If you see anything you are interested in, please send us an application. All applications are sent
to the hiring Department for consideration.
We can't just create jobs, as we answer to the taxpayers. We may add jobs during our budget process, if
an additional position is warranted due to our economic growth and workload.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to call me at 409-764-3643.
