POOL STRUCTURE & SURFACE COATING
A wise man once remarked, "owning an ofd swimming pool is a lot
like filling a hole in the ground with money. Everyday you roll a
wheelbarrow filled with quarters, dimes, and silver dollars up to it and
throw them in. Some days you only pour a few shovels in, and other days
you just dump in the whole wheelbarrow. But everyday -- it' s yours." _
All things in this world fall apart. Sejmming pools just seem to do so
faster. College Station swimming pools are no exception.
The cost of new construction Vter seems prohibitively expensive
to pool owners. Prices will vary depending on the type of construction
selected, local labor /construction costs, local site conditions, etc.
Most estimates put a price for construction of a new commercial outdoor
pool between $60 and $100 per square foot (of pool surface area). Since
a good quality renovation can be accomplished for between $8 to $11 per
square foot, it is easy to see why so many pool owners are deciding to
renovate their existing pools rather than build new pool facilities.
The City of College Station experienced tremendous growth in the
late seventies and early eighties. In a span of eleven years, there
were three swimming pools built.

All College Station swimming pools are indeed bottomless money pits,
requiring constant maintenance and repair. This is not without its
benefits though: there haV vbeen close to 800,000 visitations over the
past fifteen years, not-to mention the thousands that have participated
in the numerous instructional, fitness, and recreational programs
offered at the pools.
All of the City's swimming pools are the poured concrete type as
opposed to the guni to (plaster) type. Before diving in to fix all the
problems with our pools, an understanding of what the forces are that
make concrete pools self - destruct, and how to protect the pools.
t/
1
Even the best laid concrete is not free from the effects of
weather. As everyone who has ever hit a pothole knows, concrete breaks
down when it is exposed to weather. As the concrete warms and cools it
expands and contracts. This movement can cause cracks to form either in
the surface or to run through the entire concrete slab. Additional
problems can occur when the concrete is saturated with water and then
exposed to repeated freezing and thawing conditions. This frequently
causes spalling as the aggregate and concrete surface explode away from
the concrete.
When the concrete of the pool shell is positively isolated from
the pool water dramatic slowing of the rate at which the concrete
degrades w i l l occur. Eventually, there is hAIM minimizing of the single
greatest cause of concrete degradation: the freeze /thaw cycle.
Acid conditions against the pool shell can create other problems.
This, in effect, neutralizes the alkalinity in the plaster and concrete
making it more susceptible to later degradation.
Many pools simply have pool construction techniques to blame for
their problems. Contractors may have added sodium chloride to speed up
the concrete setting process. Soil compaction may have been
insufficient, resulting in settling cracks, or the concrete may have
been allowed to dry too fast on a hot day causing porous surface cracks.
Any or all these conditions can result in a problem pool in years to
come.
Protecting the pool shell from water infiltration will
dramatically extend the life of the pool. Neither plaster, gunite,
paint, tile grout or concrete is water impermeable. All will allow
water to pass, and if the pool wall or floor is then exposed to
freeze /thaw cycles then problems will result.
The single best way to protect your existing investment is to
reduce the pool's exposure to freeze /thaw cycles by keeping the pool as
full in the winter months as is practical (possibly covering it with a
safety cover), and to protect the pool against water infiltration.
Many pools need to be renovated because of changes in acceptable
standards from when it was originally built. A pool that is currentl y
"grandfathered in" to code compliance will usually have to be brought up
to code in all areas of non - compliance if you undertake a renovation.

EARLY SWIMMING TEAMS
Prior to the 1933 - 3 4 school year the Aggie swimming team was
a campus club activity with a sponsor -coach assigned to the
club by the Department of Military Science.
In December, 1934, the Southwest Conference recognized swimming
as an official sport with championships to be awarded on the
basis of the results of an annual Southwest Conference Swimming
Meet. However, the first such Texas A &M recognized team had
Capt. L. R. Nachman, USA, Inf.,. as its coach.
In Seotember, 1934,. Art Adamson became the first full -time
Aggie swimming coach, and each year he serves he sets a new re-
cord of tenure for any Aggie coach in any sport at Texas A &M
University.
In his career,. Adamson turned out Southwest Conference Champion-
ship teams with several of his swimmers winning All- America
fame by winning a first place in the annual national meets.
In addition, he saw more than 100 of his men win All- Conference
honors.
