Bound on three sides by the Bra- zos and Navasota rivers, the county had for Its northern b0un- dory the Old San Antonio Road, The county was formally organ- /xed on Feb. 6. 1843. The first officials were appoin- ted by Congress mid were Gideon Walker, chief Justice: James D. Overton, district clerk: James I, Bowman, county clerk; Elllott McNeil Mlllican, sherlffi Thomas Bowman, coroner; and Hiram Hanover, tax assessor and ¢611ec. tot. William C. Price, Wil~am Ivlllltcan, James A, Head. RObert Henry, and Joshua Scale received commissions as justices of the peace, In 1841 Tax Assessor-Collect~ Hanover reported total tax a; sessments for the year 01,461.76, and for his s~vices 1 received a fee of 5 percent of ti assessment or $73,09. Navasota (Brazos)County was m be a part of the Third Judical District. and the district courts of the county were to meet the first. Mondays after the fourth Mom days in March and October. Until a coumy seat could be laid out and buildings constructed, the district court was to hold its ses- sions, according to law. in the home of Joseph Ferguson at Fer- guson Springs, 14 ~nlles east of present-day Bryan. The court met under the cottonwood trees near the springs in good weather.
