HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007 Recommendations for future appointments November 5, 2007 Honorable Mayor and City Council Members: The Historic Preservation Committee would like to submit some recommendations to the City Council for future appointments to this committee. Frequently, committee members are contacted by members of the public about applying for the committee and they are told to make application through the City Secretary's Office. Most of the time the HPC is unaware of who has actually submitted an application until after we receive word of who has been appointed. The committee would like to request more involvement in the appointment process. The Historic Preservation Committee, unlike many other advisory committees, is a real working committee and not just a recommending and approval body for staff activity. There is only one half -time staff person assigned to the task of Historic Preservation and committee members need to be willing to take on tasks and responsibilities within the groups to keep up the ambitious efforts of very hard working committee. Occasionally someone receives an appointment who has not actually applied within the last twelve months and their interest is no longer current while others with current applications are not appointed. We would like to request that the HPC be able to look over the list of applicants and make some recommendations as to those who might be able to add a special talent or skill or enthusiasm to the committee. Often, if citizens apply but are not appointed, the HPC may be able to tap into their talent to serve on other sub - committees. The bottom line is there are many residents out there that would be great assets to the HPC and we don't want to overlook any of them if they are interested in working. The Historic Preservation Committee understands that the final appointment and approval should remain with the City Council, but would like to have some involvement in the process prior to Council review. We sincerely appreciate your consideration of this request. Hillary Jessup Historic Preservation Committee Chairman
