HERE ARE THINGS TO DO:
AT LEAST ONE MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY
SHOULD TAKE FIRST AID TRAINING
Your local Civil Defense office can tell you where you can get Shelter
Manager, Radiological Monitor, CD Adult Education, First Aid: and
Medical Self-Help Courses.
YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SHOULD
KNOW WHERE THE NEAREST PUBLIC
FALLOUT SHELTER IS. IT WILL BE
MARKED WITH THIS SIGN:
LOCATION OF NEAREST SHELTER TO:
HOME
SCHOOL
WORK
Public fallout shelters are located in some schools. Fallout shelters can
protect against radiation carried by the fine bits of "fallout" coming
from nuclear bursts. These radiations are like X-rays. They are slowed
and stopped by thick heavy materials such as concrete and earth. If
there is no shelter in your school, learn where the nearest fallout shelter
is located.
YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SHOULD KNOW THE
CIVIL DEFENSE WARNING SIGNALS
SIGNAL ^/\4^ dW
A wavering tone or short blasts for 3 to 5 minutes - Actual attack
against this country has been detected - take protective action
immediately.
• • SIGNAL
A steady blast or tone for 3 to 5 minutes - listen for essential
emergency information)
DO NOT USE PHONE IN AN EMERGENCY
If community fallout shelter is not available, home fallout shelters can
provide protection. In many places, particularly rural areas, they would
be the only shelters. Your parents can get more information on home
shelters and how to build them from the local or state Civil Defense
office.
