Agenda -
(1) Skylab reentry. The National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) is operating a special skylab coordination
center around the clock, starting 24 hours before the abandoned
space station is expected to drop out of orbit.
The Civil Defense National Communication network is
being used to alert state and municipal authorities if it appears
debris from skylab might fall within the United States.
The Bryan office of the Dept. of Public Safety has
received progress information from Austin which they are to relay
to the law emforcements of this area and to the Director of Civil
Defense. Should skylab debris fall in this area the disaster plans
would go into effect. Also any local sightings or impact should be
reported by teletype giving brief description to the State Coordinator
Disaster Emergency Services, DPS, Austin.
Jake Canglose reviewed the current situation and
emphasised the need for using this opportunity to make sure that
the local communications plans are in force and functioning promptly.
Skylab reentry is expected Wednesday July 11.
On Wednesday July 11, 1979, skylab broke up and landed
in the Indian Ocean and Australia. It was launched on May 25, 1973.
Mr. Canglose suggested that the inventory of shelter
supplies be skipped for this year.
Col Carroll Bell will be on active duty July 23 thru
August 3. Mr. Canglose suggested that Col. Bell Contact the fire
departments to determine the number of Emergency Medical Technicians
that would be available to take a 16 hour Radiological Monitoring
course during that time. If enough are interested then the police
deaprtments would be contacted also.
Col. Bell would be the instructor if there are enough
men available for training.
Distribution was completed of the Identification Cards
to the Civil Defense appointments for 1979 thru December 1982.
These appointments were made by County Judge R.J. Holmgreen based
on the recommendation of Jake Canglose.
The 1979 -80 Brazos County Civil Defense Directory was
completed and distributed to key people concerned with emergency
planning and operations.
Distribution was made to nine top officials, county,
cities and Texas A &M University of the following publications:
1. Inf. Bulletin, DCPA No. 305, Questions and
Answers on Crisis Relocation Planning
2. Division of DES, Texas DPS, Nuclear Civil
Protection and Crisis Relocation Planning
3. Brazos County Office of Emergency Planning &
Operations, 1979 -80 Directory
July 22 -25 Judge R.J. Holmgreen and Jake Canglose
will attend an Advanced Training Seminar for Local Civil Prepared-
ness Coordinators and Public Officials. This meeting will be held
in Dallas for DCPA Region Five.
July 12, 1979 - 5:15 P.M.
Ben Wormeli substituted for Jake Canglose in a monthly
Red Cross meeting to discuss Civil Defense and Red Cross cooperation
in the event of an emergency. Red Cross has major responsibility for
meeting the needs of people who are victims in arranging for food,
shelter, clothes and other care that would be needed.
Col. Bell will participate on the Red Cross Disaster
Committee when they meet to update their plans.
