Brazos County Civil Defense Meeting
April 16,1964
Twenty five people attended a meeting held at Wm. Hughes Cafe
April 16th.. Mr. Jake Canglose,Chairman presided at this meeting.
Dr. Vance £foyer Head of the Brazos County Tornado Warning and
Meterology gave a short report on the tornado warning system in the
county. He invited everyone present to attend the 'tornado Warning
meeting tonight in the county courthouse at $;00 p.m
Mr. Jake Canglose reported a lack of communication between
Fallout Shelters and operating center in the basement of the
courthouse in case of a national emerggency.Dr. huebner,Communications
Service figured that it would cost 418.00 ,per shelter,for antenna.
Mt. Jake Canglose has written the cities and A&M authorities for
the money.The citizens band will install the antenna free Jf charge .
They will also furnish their own two way radios in case of a national
emergency and a operator will be assigned to each shelter.
Mr. H.L.Wedell chairman of the citizens band committee stated that
there were 144 operators in the cities of Bryan and College Station.
Colonel Walter Parsons was furnished a list of shelter managers,
ana a list of supplies f1r each of the shelters in College Station,
ana Texas A&M.. he is to move the supplies to the fallout shelters.
A minimum of 60 Shelter managers and Assistant Shelter managers
and 27 Radiological Monitors are needed to be trained in Bryan and
College Station was the statement made by henry L.Alsmeyer.
A Shelter Managers training course will be held in Bryan and
Mr. Ira F. Lewis agreed to head the instructors. .sir. Fred Sandlin
City Manager and director will find the place to hold the meeting.
Two training courses will be held at Texas A&M and TYir. Calvin Reese
agreed to head the course of instructors.Mr. John rill will find
a place to hold the meeting. Ar. Jimmie Lavis Radiological Service
Committee will direct the Radiological Monitors course to be held
at Texas A&M.
Lt. Colonel C.R.Moorehead will find two standby reservist to
help with the Civil Defense Program in the county.
Mr. John Hill brought up the lack of information,that the
public has about Givil Defense in the county.At the last meeting
ivir. Hortons name was suggested and he was contacted by two
directors,and he declined the job. The name of Mr. Knight of the
Journalism Department at A &M was suggested and the directors will
contact him.
Mr. Henry L.Alsmeter will coordinate the Shelter, Managers
and Radiological Monitors training courses.
