1. ATOM: The smallest particle of an element that retains all characteristics of
that element.
2. BETA PARTICLE: Radiation contained in fallout.
3. CONTAMINATION: Deposit of radioactive material on surface of land, buildings,
objects, human beings, etc. -- following a nuclear explosion.
4. DECAY: The decrease in radioactive material with passage of time.
5. DOSE: A quantity of radiation absorbed by the body of animal and man.
6. FALLOUT: Dustlike particles of radioactive materials created by nuclear
explosion.
7. FISSION: The process in which the nucleus of an atom is split.
8. GAMMA RAYS: High energy radiation contained in radioactive fallout. Most
dangerous.
9. HALF -LIFE: Time required for a radioactive substance to lose 50% of its
activity. Is never completely gone.
10. INITIAL RADIATION: Nuclear radiation emitted from the fireball and atomic
cloud during first minute after explosion.
11. INTENSITY: Express exposure of radiation at any given location.
12. PROTECTION FACTOR: Relative reduction in the amount of radiation that would
be received by a person in a protected location compared
with amount received if unprotected. Amount of protection.
13. RADIATION SICKNESS: A disease resulting from excessive exposure to radiation.
Early symptoms are nausea, vomiting, followed by loss of
hair, hemorrhage, inflammation of mouth and general loss
of energy.
14. RESIDUAL RADIATION: Nuclear radiation, which persists longer than one minute.
Residues of fallout.
15. SHELTER: Specially constructed refuge for purpose of protecting people, live-
stock, and other living organisms from gamma radiation.
16. SHIELDING: Any material which absorbs radiation and thus can be used to make
a shelter.
17. SURFACE BURST: Explosion of nuclear weapon at the surface of the earth. Effect
of fallout is most serious from this type of burst.
18. ROENTGEN: Unit for measuring radiation.
