When floods, hurricanes, or other natural disasters threaten or immediately
on their occurrence, the Red Cross provides food, clothing, shelter, and
medical and nursing or hospital care on the basis of evident need. Fre-
quently this assistance is given to large numbers of people on a mass
care basis, but, whenever possible, the Red Cross deals directly with
each family on an i 1 fi i j 1 ndividual basis.

After the emergency, the Red Cross stays on the job to assist families and
individuals in meeting disaster - caused needs that they cannot meet them-
selves. The rehabilitation program is designed to help a family regain its
capacity to reach and maintain its predisaster standard of living.
