HomeMy WebLinkAboutHurricane Alicia critique 1983 In preparation for approaching Hurricane Alicia, Brazos County Civil Defense Director, Jake Canglose, called a special meeting for 9:00 a.m., Wed., August 17, 1983, in the radar room of the 0&M Bldg. at TAMU to coordinate county -wide emergency plans. In attendance were officials from Brazos County and the cities of Bryan and College Station. Alicia hit the Galveston -area coast about 2:00 a.m. Thurs, August 18, with 115 mph winds and 12 -foot tides. Alicia moved inland to Houston, North through Montgomery County and hit Brazos County at approximately 12:00 noon Thurs. Locally, winds of mph with gusts up to mph were experienced. Brazos County Civil Defense office at the Brazos Center was open on a continuing basis from 12:00 noon Wed. until 5:00 p.m. Thurs. at which time the hurricane had passed through the Brazos Valley; Alicia was downgraded to a tropical storm at approximately 3:00 p.m. Thurs. The Civil Defense office was staffed by Jeridan Strong and Millie Parrack; also, 2 Bryan Police Dept. Officers assisted from 10:00 p.m. Thurs. until 6:00 a.m. Friday. Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. at the Brazos Center, Jake Canglose again met with all the people involved in emergency planning - Civil Defense workers, Red Cross, city and county officials, and utility directors - to confirm that all the emergency measures had been completed. The Red Cross was notified at approximately 1:00 p.m. Wednesday to prepare to set up shelters for the evacuees. At about 5:00 p.m. Martha Nix set up a processing center at the Brazos Center to receive the evacuees. After some difficulty locating officials to unlock Bryan High School, a shelter was set up in Bryan High; it remained open until Friday at which time evacuees were advised that it was safe to return to their homes.
