EAST TEXAS ENGINEER IS NAMED
TO HEAD FEMA REGIONAL OFFICE
WASHINGTON -- Edd Hargett, an East Texas civic leader and chief
engineer for a bi- county electric cooperative there, has been named a regional
director for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Hargett, 39, will direct the agency's Region VI, which assists
the states of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico to plan for,
respond to and recover from natural and man -made disasters and emergencies.
The regional office is located in Denton, Texas.
The agency's new regional director, a native of Marietta, Texas,
has been chief engineer for the Bowie -Cass (counties) Electric Cooperative, Inc.
in Douglassville, Texas, for the past 10 years.
Hargett, a graduate of Texas A &M University where he was selected
All Southwest Conference quarterback in 1967 and 1968 and an Academic All
American in 1968, was a professional football player in the National Football
League and the World Football League from 1969 until 1975.
He was an unsuccessful Republican Party candidate for the U.S.
House of Representatives in a special election in Texas' First Congressional
District in 1985, narrowly losing the race in a traditionally Democrat district.
Hargett is married and has three children.
In his new post, Hargett replaces R. Dell Greer, who has been acting
regional director since Jerry Stephens left the position in 1986.
