Dear Mary Bess:
We received today the Rock Prairie Schoolhouse and Church marker application,
along with the information about the current controversy. While we apreciate
the efforts of the Brazos County Historical Commission, our policies prevent
us from marking a site without the owners' permission. Since property owner-
ship is in dispute, the Texas Historical Commission cannot take action at
this time. Should the matter be settled to the satisfaction of both parties
involved, and should the rightful owner want to proceed with the application,
we would be glad to assist with the project.
Under current standards, the sanctuary would not qualify for a building marker
(medallion) because of the past alterations, including new windows, added
steeple and aluminum siding. It would now only qualify for a subject marker
(for the Rock Prairie Baptist Church congregation) which affords no protection
for the structure. That is, we would have no authority to review further
alterations to the site.
We are returning the application and historical documentation until such time
as the current controversy is settled.

(iiry WHEREAS, it is the duty and responsibility of the Brazos Historical
Commission to encourage and assist in the marking of sites and the erection
of markers to persons of outstanding significance; and,
WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of this Commission that the only
known remaining early combination one -room school /church building existing
in Brazos County is on the verge of being destroyed as to the original
character and purpose for which it has been used for the past ninety -two
years,
BE IT RESOLVED, That the Brazos County Historical Commission go on
record that the said Rock Prairie Schoolhouse /Church is worthy of being
preserved as a significant historic building in Brazos County; and
BE IT RESOLVED, That it is the sense of this Commission that it should be
preserved in its present form; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That it is the unanimous opinion of this
Commission that the owners of this historic school /church proceed at the
earliest possible date to seek from the Texas State Historical Commission
a site marker and a medallion for the structure.

us to do," Knight said.
