( "BILL") WARREN
July 5, 1917 — March 27, 2006
William Michael ( "Bill ") Warren died
Monday, March 27, 2006, in Bryan, TX. He
was bom July 5, 1917, on the family fame
settled by his great - grandfather in 1836 on
a land grant in what would later become the
state of Michigan.
Bill attended the public schools in
Bancroft, MI, and graduated from Michigan
State University in 1940. He came to Texas
A &M to do graduate work, and taught
animal husbandry courses and coached the
livestock judging team until he went into the
Marine Corps in late 1942. He spent three
years in the service during World War IL two
of them overseas with the First Marine Division
on New Britain, Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Okinawa,
and in Teintsen, China.
He received his master's degree from Texas
A &M in 1948, and his PhD in 1952 from the University
of Missouri in Columbia, MO. He was an honorary Vice
President of the American Quarter Horse Association and a
lifetime member of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association.
He was a member of the Animal Husbandry Department faculty at Texas A &M until 1955, when
be left to join the Animal Sciences Department at Auburn University in Auburn, AL. He was
Department Head there for 23 years.
In 1980 he retired from Auburn and took the position of Executive Director of Santa Gertrudis
Breeders International Association in Kingsville, TX. He retired from the SGBI in 1988, and he and
his wife returned to College Station to make their home.
In 1989 he was hired by the Texas Extension Service to direct the International Stockmen's School
in conjunction with the Houston Stock Show, and his final retirement was from that in 1993. He had
a long and varied career in agriculture, and continued to enjoy contact with many friends and former
students.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Glass Warren, and their six sons: William Michael
Warren, Jr. (Anne McLeod), of Birmingham, AL; Charles Wicker Warren (Laura Kann), of Decatur,
GA; the Rev. Dr. John Wells Warren (Leigh Williamson), of Auburn, AL; James Perrin Warren of
Lexington, VA; Joseph Robert Warren of Auburn, AL; and Andrew Louis Warren (Carol Cain), of
Cypress, TX.
He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: Dr. William Powers Warren (Mary Katherine Bell)
of Chattanooga, TN; Laura Warren Cox (Dr. David E.) of Winston - Salem, NC; Amy Warren Neiman
(John) of Athens, GA; Bryan Wicker Warren (Jennifer Thomas) of Snellville, GA; Stephen Thomas
Warren and Carolyn Elizabeth Warren of Lilbum, GA; Jennifer Meadows Warren and Margaret
Elizabeth Warren of Auburn, AL; Sylvia Emilie Warren and Eline Marlene Warren of Lexington,
VA; Kate Marie Warren and Joseph Forester Warren of Auburn, AL; and Allison Rose Warren and
Joanna Hart Warren of Cypress, TX.
He is also survived by nine great - grandchildren: Phoebe Anne, William Patrick, and Henry Fletcher
Warren of Chattanooga, TN; Hannah Frances, Samuel Warren, and Ethan Perrin Cox of Winston -
Salem, NC; Amelia Jane and Michael Robert Neiman of Athens, GA; and lordyn Marie Warren of
Snellville, GA.
Bill's parents were Perrin Charles and Gladys Hill Warren. He was preceded in death by two
sisters, Ina Warren Welmers (Everett) of Los Angeles, CA, and Jean Warren Whitney (Theodore) of
Whittier, CA, and two brothers, Edward Perrin Warren (Evelyn Lee) of Athens, GA, and Ted Warren
(Genevieve Timlick) of Kalkaska, MI. '
He is survived by two sisters, Marion Warren Durling (Howard), of Elsie, MI, and Frances
Warren Durling (Glen) of Bancroft, MI; a sister -in -law, Milhe Bedgood Warren (Edward) of
Athens, GA; and by his brother -in -law, Joe Glass, and wife Jonell (Seale), of Lufkin, TX.
Bill Warren was a devoted husband and father, and a proud grandfather and great - grandfather.
Besides his large immediate family he is survived by a number of cousins and nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bryan, TX and the Men's Bible Class.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 31, 2006, at Hillier Funeral Home, with a memorial
service at 11 a.m. Private burial service will be in Bryan Cemetery.
