HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/03/2010 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee 4/5/2010 MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, May 3, 2010 College Station Conference Center 1300 George Bush Drive, Room 103 College Station, Texas 77840 4:00 pm Attendance: Earl Apgar, Pat Cleere, Louis Hodges, Susan Irza, Hillary Jessup, James McGinnis, Libby Vastano, Meredith Waller Approved Absence: Anne Triche-Steen, Ernie Wright Unapproved Absence: N/A Staff Attendance: Anne Boykin, Heritage Programs Coordinator Visitors: N/A Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Earl Apgar at 4:08 p.m. Agenda Item #2-3: Hear Visitors: N/A Agenda Item #4: Possible action and discussion on absence requests. Anne T. was absent due to illness. Ernie was absent due to business travel. Agenda Item #5: Possible action and discussion to approve meeting minutes of regular meeting of April 5, 2010. Minutes were approved as written. (SI/hj) Agenda Item #6: Report from HPC Chairperson. No report at this time. Agenda Item #7: Report from Heritage Programs Coordinator. See attached Progress Report. Anne B. also reported on the issues pertaining to the comprehensive College Station history book and media project. Anne and David Gerling are working on a proposal to present to Tony Cisneros that will then be presented to council. Agenda Item #8: Report on 75th Anniversary meeting. The third meeting of the planning committee was held on Friday, April 9th at 8am at the Conference Center. There were more discussions of budgets and ideas. Earl will meet with David Gwinn and Glenn Brown to seek further assistance in planning the 75th anniversary. City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee 4/5/2010 Agenda Item #9: Possible action and discussion on Pike National Historic Trail Association request for council resolution. Susan Irza discussed her draft letter in support of the efforts of the Pike National Historic Trail Association. A motion was made, approved and seconded to send the letter to David Gerling, Tony Cisneros and Mayor White. (JM/lv) Agenda Item #10: Possible action and discussion on a newspaper clipping day. It was decided to schedule three clipping days over the summer that will coincide with our regular HPC meetings: June 7, July 12, August 2. Agenda Item #11: Committee Reports: • Development – Susan Irza No report at this time. • Native American Interpretive Path – Ernie Wright No report at this time. • Historic Markers Program – Meredith Waller Anne B. reported that no response has been received from Mr. Habib on the missing application for a marker. • Oral History Project – Lou Hodges Lou called our attention to an article in “The Eagle” about the Caddo Mounds obtaining signage along El Camino Real. http://www.theeagle. com/texas/Mounds-mark-early-Texas-life • PR/Communications/Sponsorships – James McGinnis James discussed suggestions for the Freemasonry program in July. We agreed to host this lecture off site and limit the number of guests to 85. • Landmark Commission (Liaison) – Hillary Jessup Hillary reported that there are ongoing issues with the historic district designation that are impeding the Landmark Commission’s progress. There will be a training session May 10th, in the Council Chambers. • Educational Initiatives/School Activities – Libby Vastano No report at this time. • Volunteer Recruitment – Anne Triche-Steen No report at this time. • Exploring History Lunch Lectures – Earl Apgar See James McGinnis’ committee report.
