HomeMy WebLinkAbout03 PH Progress Report 03.29.2006 PROGRESS REPORT Anne Boykin Project HOLD Heritage Coordinator Neighborhood Services Feb. 27 — Mar. 29, 2006 I. PREFACE The last three weeks have been spent preparing for the HPC Heritage Month activities to be held in May and scanning documents in to Project HOLD. I am still trying to work in time to finish designing the 2006 brochures for Project HOLD, Explore Lunch Lectures, Seminar Suppers, Neighborhood Partnership Program and Local Historic Markers. II. PROJECT HOLD (PH) A. Acquisitions — 65 files resulting in 268 pages scanned 1. From Nan & J.O. Alexander a. WWII records and files from J.O.'s war years, vintage newspapers from WWII documenting A &M's 29 generals and numerous cadets who became soldiers. b. Memorabilia from J.O.'s Yell Leader days at A &M. c. "Twelfth Man" sheet music autographed by Linn Munnerlynn. d. Articles and documents from their work in instituting the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center. e. Documents relating to Brazos Valley flooding and agriculture. 2. From Anne Boykin a. A &M Consolidated High School Directory 1965 -1966 that documents the African- American students who enrolled in CHS prior to the burning of Lincoln School. b. Machine language computer programs from 1967 Computer Science Class at A &M Consolidated. c. Photo of keypunch machines in action, 1967. d. 1985 photo of Joe Messina and his Gulf Station at Southside. 3. From Wanda (Luedke) McGill a. The Eagle from Brazos Sesquicentennial, 1986. b. The Eagle from Brazos Centennial, 1989. 4. From Neal Nutall a. Letters from Pres. Nixon and Vice President Agnew. 5. From Colleen Risinger a. Photo album of actual battle scenes from the Battle of Crete and off the coast of Australia complete with her husband's notes. 6. From Dipankar Sen a. A 1960 Cadet Slouch (Jim Earle) pamphlet on "How to Flunk a Course." Anne Boykin 1/3 3/29/06 7. From Vonn Casares a. Miscellaneous items from the City Secretary's office along with a promise of a trip to the warehouse to go through old photos. 8. From our own files a. Washington Chapel Historic Marker Application b. Roans Chapel Historic Marker Application 9. From Wanda (Luedke) McGill a. A &M Consolidated High School Yearbooks from the mid 70s. B. Connections. 1. Russell Kennedy, a Public Works intern, located some old plans of the water tower and some early Southside businesses. 2. I ran into another CHS classmate, David Cooper, at the East Gate Street Lighting. David promises to bring more photos and documents from his father's (Dr. O.C. Cooper's) many years of medical practice. 3. A meeting with Steve Beachy yielded the official City report on the exhumation and relocation of the Carter family cemetery. There are about 30 slides with the report as well. I will have the slides placed on a CD. It is Jim Boone and Steve Beachy's personal opinions that the facts of the story need to remain private for a few more years before inclusion in Project HOLD. C. Oral History Interviews 1. Anne Triche -Steen is transcribing the three interviews we have conducted so far. The committee is on hold at the moment until Anne can catch up with us. III. BRIDES OF THE BRAZOS EXHIBIT A. Great reception so far! 1. Grace Calbert continues to report that the reviews are most favorable with lots of people stopping by to see the exhibit. She also reports that the exhibit is a wonderful backdrop for the numerous wedding functions that take place each weekend at the Conference Center. 2. If anyone has ideas for photos, memorabilia or other articles of wedding attire to include in the next phase of the exhibit, please let me know. I am specifically looking to document African - American or Hispanic weddings. IV. HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE (HPC) A. Heritage Day in the Parks "Hunt for History" 1. Marguerite Anthony, Ernie Wright and I are working together on the May Heritage Day in the Parks event. The event will be held May 20` from loam — 2pm and will include activities at several parks that will coordinate with already scheduled PARD events. 2. A Project HOLD Open House will be held at the same time at City Hall. 3. Our sub - committee will be looking for volunteers and HPC members to help oversee the various park activities, and host the Open House. Anne Boykin 2/3 3/29/06 IV. LASERFICHE (LF) A. LF Program 1. The LF program is behaving itself fairly well so far. There seem to be fewer quirks and tech calls on it. 2. Having said that, I spoke briefly with Claudine Hunting about LF at the last Explore luncheon. She is very disappointed with the LF search engine. I have asked her to send an email documenting the problems she is having so that I can forward it to the techs. I have also invited her to drop by the office so that I could personally help her with the web site. V. PROMOTIONAL A. Brochures 1. The Project HOLD and EXPLORE brochures are ready for approval prior to printing. Katie has suggested that we print them in color this year. 2. I have designed a combined Neighborhood Partnership and Seminar Supper brochure. It, too is awaiting approval. 3. The Local Historic Marker Brochure is almost complete. I am missing the information on one of the markers ( #68) that was issued a few years ago sometime between April 2002 and April 2003. I am continuing to search past Minutes, past Agendas and the actual marker files. B. Bookmarks 1. Katie has suggested that we purchase laminated bookmarks printed with our Project HOLD information and traditional "poster boy" photo of Bill Lancaster to distribute in order to better publicize Project HOLD. C. Business Cards 1. Katie recently ordered new business cards for me with the Project HOLD website on them. We have also made a slight change to clarify my title. It was a bit confusing for some folks with my title listed as Heritage Volunteer Coordinator. Some weren't certain whether or not I was a volunteer or an employee of the City. Now, the cards read: Project HOLD Heritage Coordinator. VI. VOLUNTEERS A. Presidential Service Awards 1. It's official! Colleen Risinger, Tom Taylor, Bill Lancaster, Ruth Bramson and Arsenio Rodrigues will be receiving awards at the April Explore Luncheon for their volunteer service to our community. Together, they have dedicated over 900 hours to Project HOLD, the HPC, churches, nursing homes and /or other non - profit organizations. WOW! Not a bad showing for our first accounting with the Presidential Service Awards. Many, many thanks to all of you! Anne Boykin 3/3 3/29/06
