2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes were approved as written.
3. HEAR VISITORS: Debbie welcomed Mike Luther and Marci Rodgers. Mike had nothing to
present.
Marci introduced herself stating that the City of College Station had created a position in
the Parks Department for a Senior Services Coordinator to put together programs for the
older adults in the community. She stated that if any of the Historic Preservation
Committee (HPC) members knew of anyone who might be interested in serving on the
advisory committee, or if they had any suggestions for any programs, trips, tours, etc., to
contact her at the Parks and Recreation Department at 764 -6371.
4. REVIEW & DISCUSSION OF HISTORIC HOME /BUILDING PLAQUE APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED:
No new applications had been submitted.
5. REPORT ON CSISD INVOLVEMENT WITH TEACHER RECOGNITION PROGRAM: Elton was not
present, but David said Elton had talked to the school district and neither Dr. Scales or their
public information officer, Kelly Robic, could attend. The report was postponed until Elton
or David could meet with Dr. Scales. David said when he'd talked with Kelly Robic, she'd
been hesitant about naming specific classrooms after teachers. The idea of a 'wall of
honor' being displayed at the high school was discussed.
Debbie said she would like to make sure that the Lincoln School teachers were not left out
once the program got underway. She said there were several people from Lincoln School
that have passed away, but who were extremely influential in education throughout CSISD
from the late 1920's through the 1950's.

6. STREET NAMING HISTORY PROJECT: Joan had some corrections to the information for
Dominik Drive (updated list attached). David said Pam had been going through and
updating to include the complete street name (street, road, boulevard, etc.), from a list of
College Station Streets she'd found in the phone book. Pam said the streets which had
been discussed as possibly being named after counties, had been verified against a list of
Texas counties she'd located.
Debbie said she would talk to George Boyett about Patricia Street and some of the other
street names, to see if he could give her some history on them. The members agreed that
the streets named after people would have more historical significance and needed to
be researched. Finding out who platted the particular street and the name of the
developer would be the first step. David said he would contact the City Planning
Department to see if they could generate a list of developers or builders for the HPC to
contact.
Dennis said that at the last Planning and Zoning meeting a man named Scott Samuelson
had stated that he had a picture of his home when it was located on the A &M campus.
Doc said he would contact Mr. Samuelson to see if a copy could be made.
7. OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS: Dennis said at a previous Planning & Zoning meeting
there had been an attempt on the part of Rother's Bookstore to put a 93 -space parking lot
in the back of the building on Southside, to provide additional parking. The HPC decided
affer some discussion that it wanted to send a letter to the Mayor and City Council
regarding this issue. Russell moved to form a resolution, Joan seconded, and the resolution
carried. Doc agreed to draff a copy of the letter for Deborah's signature resolving that
the HPC:
* endorses the Planning and Zoning Commission's decision to deny the variance
which would allow a 93 -space parking lot to be built behind Rother's / Loupots' in
Southside; and
* encouraging the City Council to support the Planning and Zoning Commission's
decision, in order to maintain Southside's integrity as a single - family, residential,
historical area.
Dennis stated that the area behind the bookstore parking lot was originally zoned R -1, but
in 1989, the city initiated a rezoning change to R -6. The city later made a
recommendation to change it back to R -1, however previous Planning and Zoning
Commissioners decided against doing so at the time. HPC members discussed and
agreed that the current zoning of R -6 needed to be reverted back to R -1, as originally
requested by the city. It was decided that the resolution should be amended to include:
* requesting that the city revert the zoning behind the Rother's' /Loupot's property
from R -6 back to R -1.
The amendment was voted on and passed. The motion for the resolution to include the
amendment was voted on and passed, and the entire resolution was adopted.
Discussion followed, regarding the need for the Planning and Zoning Commission and the
Parks and Recreation Board to notify the HPC and the Southside and Eastgate
neighborhoods when zoning issues arose involving those areas. The members agreed that
if it was an important issue, it could meet more than once a month. Deborah said there
was no reason why the HPC couldn't have a joint meeting with those committees if
something came up. It was decided that the HPC would send a second letter to the
Mayor and City Council, with copies to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Parks and
Historic Preservation Committee

Recreation Board, and the Community Appearance Committee. A motion was made,
voted on and passed, to draft a letter for member's signatures asking:
* that any issue or request which arose regarding the Southside or Eastgate
neighborhoods (such as requests for: zone variances, in -fill development; changes
in the parks, changes to existing streets, etc.), be simultaneously submitted to the
HPC. This will allow the HPC to give the input needed in order to preserve and
maintain the integrity of those neighborhoods as historic, single- family, residential
areas.
Margaret agreed to draft the letter. She said she would send a draft by e -mail to all
members for their review. When a final was ready Pam would print it on HPC letterhead for
all members to sign.
Jeff Carroll /History Book Update: David said that he'd talked to Jeff who said that it had
taken him through Christmas to read through the portion of information he had. David
said Jeff had identified about 12 stories but none had been completed yet. Once they
are complete, they will be passed on to the HPC for review, and Jeff will pick up and read
through the next batch of paperwork and information from Grace Calbert.
8. ADJOURN: The meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
