HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/09/1992 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1992 - 7:00 PM CENTRAL PARK CONFERENCE ROOM 1000 KRENEK TAP ROAD MEMBERS PRESENT: Gary Halter, Chairman; Joan Lamkin; Lois Beach; Cynthia Sampson; Les Hawkins, Eric Schulte; Florace Kling; Nancy Sawtelle; Deborah Jasek; Vernon Schneider, Council Liaison MEMBERS ABSENT: Gary Bassinger STAFF PRESENT: David Gerling, Special Facilities Supt.; I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:08pm by Gary. II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Lois motioned to approve the minutes, Florace seconded; the minutes were approved. III. REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS: One application was presented for approval: 710 Park Place - Karl E. Black and Mary- Margaret Sexton. Joan moved that the application be accepted, Les seconded. The committee approved the application and the marker will be number 22. IV. SET MARKER DEDICATION DATE FOR ROCK PRAIRIE SCHOOL AND CHURCH: Gary has spoken with the church and they are possibly going to set the dedication date in conjunction with their annual pot luck dinner event in November. V. REPORT ON SURFACE TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM: David stated that he has kept in contact with a man from the state who informed David that the State is currently discussing what to do with the money, and that it can be asked for in March, 1993. David said that he would like to use the money to possibly purchase the Clancy house and land located on 2818. A building official told David that the Clancys Historic Preservation Committee Wednesday, , 1992 Page 2 Seer. were interested in selling the lot. David informed the Committee the City would probably not be interested in purchasing that tract of land, because their top priorty now is Wolf Pen Creek Park and the land that surrounds it. VI. DISCUSSION OF FUTURE PROJECTS: Deborah Jasek volunteered to research the Black Education in the Brazos Valley for a marker. Gary volunteered to take over research of the College Station Train Station from Eric Schulte. Gary stated that the City of College Station originated in 1938, which does not qualify it for a historic marker until it is 75 years old. The Committee inquired about the College Station Historic brochures. David stated that he will start editing the current brochure and pass it on to the committee prior to printing. VII. OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS: The Committee asked about the Carter headstones. David said that the new headstones had already been installed at Richard Carter Park. Gary informed the new committee members that the City paid for the relocation of the Carter gravesites. David told the Committee that no other donations were received, including from Scott and White Clinic. David distributed a copy of the Brazos Heritage brochure to be viewed. He stated that the brochure would be edited some more due to the size. VII. ADJOURN: The meeting was adjourned at 8:03pm.
