HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/12/1992 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH, 1992 - 7:00 PM CENTRAL PARK CONFERENCE ROOM 1000 KRENEK TAP ROAD MEMBERS PRESENT: Joan Lamkin, Eric Schulte, Bonnie Woolverton, Lois Beach, Florace Kling MEMBERS ABSENT: Gary Halter, Chairman; Roger Feldman; Les Hawkins; Cynthia Sampson; Nancy Crouch, Council Liaison STAFF PRESENT: David Gerling, Bridgette George I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was call to order at 7:04 pm by Lois Beach. II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes were approved except for one correction that was made under "Other Committee Concerns "; Joan mentioned that the Chamber of Commerce didn't have any historic brochures, not Lois, as stated. III. REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS: One application was presented for approval. The house is located at 501 Kerry Street owned by Derek & Jennifer Morris. The application was approved and will be plaque #18. Lois asked David to bring this application to the next meeting for Gary and the rest of the committee to review. IV. ROCK PRAIRIE SCHOOL AND CHURCH UPDATE: David stated the Parks Department got back the final wording for the plaque. David and Steve Beachy reviewed the wording and gave it to Gary. Gary passed it on to the Elders of the Church. They will read over it and make sure that no changes need to be made. David said that the church would like it installed by July. V. FOUNDERS' WEEKEND UPDATE: David stated that it is going very well. Friday, April 10th, there will be a concert at Richard Carter Park at 7:00 PM. Saturday, April 11th, is the Shiloh Historical Marker Dedication at the College Station Cemetery at 11:00 AM; at 5:30 -7:30 PM there will be a Founders Reception at Messina Hof Winery. Sunday, April 12th, at 2:00 PM they will Historic Preservation Committee Wednesday, January 8, 1992 Page 2 V. FOUNDERS' WEEKEND UPDATE (continued): have the dedication of the Harvey Mitchell Hall Cornerstone at Texas A &M University. VI. RICHARD CARTER CEMETERY UPDATE: David stated that Precious Memories was having problems gathering information regarding the back of the headstones. Lois stated that Gary had pictures of the backs. David stated that even though the pictures show three headstones, Eleanor Nantz remembers there being four; one of them being Frank's. Hopefully the headstones will be finished before April 10th, so that they can be dedicated on Founders' Day Weekend. David stated that Rebecca Landham was nearby when the headstones were removed back in 1966. She thought that the men were certified movers and had permission to move them. Rebecca has remembered a lot about the cemetery from Wendall's stories; she seldom went to the cemetery herself. VII. OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS: Lois stated that Randi Merrill, the new Brazos Heritage Society President, has shown an interest in being on the Historic Preservation Committee. Randi has recently moved to College Station. David had recently contacted Connie Hooks and asked about the number of official members that are allowed on the Committee. She stated that we could have nine official members, but an unlimited number of unofficial members. The Committee thought it would be a great idea to have her as a member; she could also act as a liaison between the two committees, which Lois currently does. David stated that the committee received a $100 donation from Mr. & Mrs. F. Duane Carter for the Carter Family headstones. David stated that Lillian Robinson is working on getting a Historic State Marker on Black education. Eric stated that he will be leaving B /CS March 18 through May 19 and will take the Train Station information with him to work on. VII ADJOURN: The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm.
