HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/11/1991 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1991 7:00 P.M. CENTRAL PARK CONFERENCE ROOM MEMBERS PRESENT: Gary Halter, Chairman, Joan Lamkin, Eric Schulte, Cynthia Sampson, Florace Kling, Bonnie Woolverton, Nancy Crouch, Council Liaison MEMBERS ABSENT: Lois Beach, Les Hawkins, Roger Feldman, STAFF PRESENT: David Gerling, Special Facilities Superintendent, Bridgette George, Secretary/Receptionist, Connie Hooks, City Secretary L CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:05 P.M. IL SWEAR IN NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Connie swore in three new Committee members: Bonnie Woolverton, Cynthia Sampson and Florace Kling. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes were approved, with the exception of the name Anderson which should be Henderson. The correction was made. IV. REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS: #11 - 200 Pershing : Kenn and Tammy Tiner Harding. This house was built in 1940 with an architectural style of Monterey Revival. #12 - 600 W. Dexter Dr. : Timothy & Mary Hayes. Built in 1929. Both of the applications were approved. The Lincoln High School application for a historical building marker was approved by the Committee by telephone. The Lincoln Center was presented with the Plaque on September 2nd, 1991. V. SET DATE FOR PLAQUE PRESENTATIONS: Gary spoke with Mayor Ringer about having the home owners' presented with their plaques at City Council meetings instead of Historical Preservation meetings. The Committee decided that their would be more publicity and recognition at the Council meetings. Mayor Ringer expressed that this would be fine and should be coordinated through the City Secretary. Historic Preservation Committee Wednesday, September 11, 1991 Page 2 VL SHILOH COMMUNITY MARKER UPDATE: The Texas Historical Commission has ordered the marker for casting and it should be ready for shipment around the end of October. David Gerling stated that a date was already set for the dedication of the marker, which will be April 11th, 1992. VII. EASTERWOOD AIRPORT UPDATE: The Airport is not old enough for a marker. The Committee will store all of the information collected and save it for a future marker application. VIII COLLEGE STATION RAILROAD STATION UPDATE: Eric volunteered to do the research on the railroad station. He will update the Committee as he acquires the information. Gary stated that the marker will probably go on the A &M campus as a site marker. Gary stated his concern about the City paying for markers that go on campus. He feels like A &M should be paying for the ones that go on their property. The City is paying for the railroad marker. IX. BRAZOS HERITAGE SOCIETY REQUEST: The Society is updating their "Guide to Historic Brazos County" and would like the Historical Committee to donate $1000 to the project. They won't need the funds until the Spring of 1992. The Committee has asked for $2250 for the next budget year. $750 will go to the Rockprairie Church marker, leaving a $1500 balance. David stated that all proceeds from the Conference Center's Folk Fest Ball on October 12th, will go to the Historical Committee. David gave each member 6 tickets to sell for the Ball. The tickets are $20 per person and 150 tickets were produced. With each ticket bought, the person will receive a complimentary Folk Fest ticket for the entire weekend. The Committee decided to invite Colleen Batchelor to the next Historical meeting to explain in more detail about their project. The Committee agreed to defer the decision to donate $1000 until a later date. X. OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS: Eric is in the process of purchasing four acres of cleared land on Dowling Road and would like to donate the use of his land for temporary homesites for any possible historic homes that are facing destruction. David stated that the Parks Department is in the process of relocating Richard Carter's grave. They will start the digging at noon on September 27th. So far they have found his grave, his wife Elizabeth's grave and two others. They will be relocated at Richard Carter Park. The gravestones are still missing. Gary would like to see the gravestones reconstructed from the ictures that the Committee has. The park is located on the former homesite of Richard Carter. The A &M Consolidated Rural School marker dedication will be October 1st, at noon. It will be located in front of the field house on Welsh. OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS (continued): David has set up a meeting with Clara Mounts to discuss setting up a Historical file at the Library. Gary stated that the Corps of Cadets historical plaque write up is about ready to go. The marker will be attached to the building. David will contact the Committee members if any of the home owners will be receiving their plaques at the next City Council meeting on September 26th.
