HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/10/2007 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee Minutes Historic Preservation Committee Monday, September 10, 2007 4pm 2nd Floor Conference Room, City Hall College Station, Texas 77840 Attendance: Marguerite Anthony, Hillary Jessup, Neal Nutall, Colleen Risinger, Anne Triche- Steen, Meredith Waller, Lou Hodges, and Jane Hughey Approved Absence: Ernie Wright Staff Attendance: Anne Boykin, Historic Preservation Intern; and Peggy Calliham; Interim Neighborhood Services Coordinator Visitors Present: Ric Ploeger, Department of Parks and Recreation, City of College Station Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 4:10 p.m. Agenda Item #2: Absence Request Ernie Wright's absence approved. Agenda Item #3 -4 Visitors No action taken here Agenda Item #5: Approval of the minutes Colleen made the motion and Marguerite seconded the approval of the minutes from the August 6, 2007 meeting. The motion passed unanimously. Project updates Agenda Item #6: Exploring History Lunch Lectures It was noted that David Chapman and John Happ, were very well received at the August lecture. Beginning with the September lecture, lunches will cost $5 per person. Agenda Item #7 Historic Markers A marker application for the Lewis home at 1205 Winding Road was submitted to the committee for approval. A motion was made by Lou Hodges and seconded by Jane Hughey to approve the marker. The marker was approved unanimously. Historic home marker #78 will be awarded at a future City Council meeting. Agenda Item #8 Oral History Project Anne reported that Mary Hamlin will be having surgery and will be out for a few months. She will pick up where she left off with the oral history interviews. More volunteers are needed. Neal suggested interviews with his contacts in the Disabled American Veterans organization. Agenda Item # 9: Project HOLD See attached report. Agenda Item #10: Citizens Congress II — Neighbor to Neighbor and College Station 101: Peggy reported that there were 60 applicants so far for the event to be held Sept. 22 at the College Station Conference Center from 9am to 4pm. Peggy also reminded members of College Station 101 as a student form of Citizens University. The program, designed to create a group of student ambassadors able to act as liaisons between the citizens and students, will be held Oct. 20. Agenda Item # 11: Calendar Events Ongoing Scenes of the Sixties exhibit, CS Conference Center through December October 17 Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series, Dr. James L. Boone, "Ghost Trains of Brazos Valley" November 11 Veterans Day Celebration & Parade, downtown Bryan Opening of George Bush Museum new permanent exhibit Veterans Day celebration Veterans Park November 14 Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series, Al Jones, "A Veterans' Story" Agenda Item #12: Final Hear Visitors Ric Ploeger presented a proposal outlining a five to seven year plan that would involve additional interactive and educational signage and displays at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex. Lou Hodges expressed interest in serving on the committee. Agenda Item #13: Future Agenda Items None requested. Agenda Item # 14: Adjourn At 5:20 pm Marguerite made the motion to adjourn and Hillary seconded the motion. • Would be preferable to only appoint people who had applied within the last 12 months • Must have requested the HPC as one of their choices • HPC would like to know who has applied and make recommendations. • Also would like to ask those not appointed to serve as citizens on other sub - committees. • Would prefer those who have already shown a willingness to get involved should be given priority Agenda Item #11: Calendar Events October 17 Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series, Dr. James L.
