HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/06/2007 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee Minutes Historic Preservation Committee Monday, August 6, 2007 4pm 2nd Floor Conference Room, City Hall College Station, Texas 77840 Attendance: Marguerite Anthony, Neal Nutall, Colleen Risinger, Anne Triche- Steen, Meredith Waller, Ernie Wright Approved Absence: Jane Hughey, Hillary Jessup Staff Attendance: Anne Boykin, Historic Preservation Intern; and Peggy Calliham; Interim Neighborhood Services Coordinator Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 4:07 p.m. Agenda Item #2: Absence Request New member, Lou Hodges, was unavailable due to short notice. Agenda Item #3 & #4: Hear Visitors None present Agenda Item #5: Approval of the minutes Colleen made the motion and Marguerite seconded the approval of the minutes from the June 4, 2007 meeting. The motion passed unanimously. Project updates Agenda Item #6: Exploring History Lunch Lectures It was noted that Rev. Bob Waters, was very well received at the July lecture which brought up the ongoing discussion of RSVPs, the increasing attendance and keeping an eye on the budget. A numbered reservation list was suggested by Peggy. Lectures will be reduced to six per fiscal year beginning in October. Agenda Item #7 Historic Markers The mailing to possible marker candidates yielded one new application from Marsha and Charles Tomlin at 802 Park Place. The home was approved unanimously. Historic home marker #77 will be awarded at a future City Council meeting. A preliminary request for assistance in making application was made by Mrs. Mary Owen Hanna of 1007 Hereford Street. The sub - committee will contact her. Agenda Item #8 Oral History Project Anne reported that Mary Hamlin, Oral History Team, continues to record oral histories. She has completed several more interviews with the Portales family, Hernandez and Salazar families as well as A &M Consolidated teachers Art Bright, Jan Alston, and Harriett Martin. Anne further reported that the Sharing Memories afternoon portion of the Sixties Decade Reunion was most successful with over 75 students and teachers present and yielded many leads for future oral history candidates. Agenda Item # 9: Project HOLD Anne reported that the success of the Sixties Decade Reunion can be measured in the number of boxes of history materials in her office waiting to be scanned. There were over 250 in attendance Saturday night with the highlight being the 13 teachers also in attendance. The "Scenes of the Sixties" exhibit is up and receiving great reviews. The internship of Emily Johnson has ended as she has graduated from Sam Houston and has enrolled in graduate school at the George Bush School. She was a tremendous asset to Project HOLD and will be missed. Her replacement will be Alyson Sanders, a former Project HOLD volunteer. Agenda Item #10: Citizens Congress II — Neighbor to Neighbor and College Station 101: Peggy presented the Neighbor to Neighbor program to the committee. The program is designed to "bring a diversified group of city residents together to brainstorm, suggest ideas, and discuss issues that relate to quality of life and in particular neighborhood issues. The City Council would like to LISTEN to is constituents." There are 200 places to be filled on this committee. Applications are due by Aug. 31. The event will be held Sept. 22 at the College Station Conference Center from 9am to 4pm. Peggy also presented the College Station 101 as a student form of Citizens University. The program is designed to create a group of student ambassadors who will be able to act as liaisons between the citizens and students. The one day class will be held Oct. 20. The new Neighborhood Services Coordinator, Barbara Moore, will begin Monday, August 13. Agenda Item # 11: Calendar Events Peggy introduced the Citizens Congress II — Neighbor to Neighbor that will be held Sept. 22 at the Conference Center. The goal is to bring together off - campus students and community residents to discuss issues concerning their neighborhoods. Information about Project HOLD, the marker program and the Exploring History Lunch Lectures will be provided to the attendees. Agenda Item # 11: Calendar Events (cont.)
