Agenda Item #1: Call to Order
Meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m.
Agenda Item #2: Absence Request
Bill is leaving the HPC after 14 years.
Agenda Item #3 & #4: Hear Visitors
Emily Johnson, Project HOLD intern and Sam Houston University student
Agenda Item #5: Approval of the minutes
Jane made the motion and Ernie Wright seconded the approval of the corrected
minutes from the May 7, 2007 meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
Project updates
Agenda Item #6: Exploring History Lunch Lectures
It was noted that Warren Finch, Director, George Bush Presidential Library and
Museum, will be speaking at the June lecture on the history of the museum. Bob
Waters will be speaking in July on the history of our local churches.
Agenda Item #7 Historic Markers
Meredith reported that she, Jane and Hillary will be ready to send marker letters to
93 owners of potential historic marker homes. The marker guidelines are being
edited. Some discussion was held about clarifying the 50 year designation for the
homes. Anne is working on a re- design of the marker brochure to include in the
letters. Olivia Burnside will presented the report at the May 24 City Council
workshop. The sub - committee will meet again June 20, at 1:30 pm at the
Conference Center after the Exploring History lunch lecture to finalize all of
the historic marker documents.
Agenda Item #8 Oral History Project
Anne reported that Mary Hamlin, Oral History Team, has interviewed Mary Bolton
Eckles and Sarah Jane Goode since our last meeting. She is also continuing to
collaborate with the folks at Cushing Library. Anne has already placed some of the
interviews in Project HOLD. She asked HPC members to access the recordings
through the website to help her troubleshoot them.
Agenda Item # 9: Project HOLD
Anne reported that the word is getting out about Project HOLD.
Agenda Item #10 May as National Historic Preservation Month
Members discussed the impact of the media blitz during May. Meredith taped a
show about the historic marker program with Harold Presley on May 10.Bi11
discussed the oral history project with Scott DeLucia on May 11. Anne appeared
on the Morning Show at KTBX May 23. An edited version of Marguerite's
previous article for The Eagle appeared in the May utility bill insert. Anne created
12 slides for CH. 19 that promoted Historic Preservation Month and Project
HOLD. She reported that she is receiving numerous calls from folks about Project
HOLD. Several mentioned reading about it in the Utility Bill Insert, as well as,
hearing about it on the radio and TV shows.
Agenda Item # 11: Historic Districts
Hillary expressed concerns about the time frame of the enabling ordinance. Peggy
briefly outlined the plans for reassigning the responsibility of overseeing the
enabling ordinance back to Planning and Development Services from
Neighborhood Services. Peggy noted that the new Director of Planning and
Development Services is Bob Cowell.
Agenda Item #12: HPC Report to Council
Peggy reported that the final report was submitted to the Council. Olivia presented
the report at the Council Workshop May 24. At that meeting, Councilman Ron Gay
urged caution in moving too quickly with the enabling ordinance. Councilman
Dave Rusesink suggested that we might have folks in the community willing to
volunteer their services with the enabling ordinance.
Agenda Item #13: Update on the Hillel Foundation Project in Oakwood HOA
Bill Lancaster, Hillary and Gaines West met with Hillel developer Don Reiser.
Hillel is asking for four or five variances in their plan of an 11 story building that
would include eleven stories, of which two levels would be for a parking garage,
seven would be for condominiums and one for meeting areas and/or retail.
