HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/05/2010 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee 4/5/2010 MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, April 5, 2010 College Station Conference Center 1300 George Bush Drive, Room 103 College Station, Texas 77840 4:00 pm Attendance: Earl Apgar, Pat Cleere, Louis Hodges, Susan Irza, Hillary Jessup, Anne Triche-Steen, Libby Vastano, Meredith Waller, Ernie Wright. Approved Absence: James McGinnis Unapproved Absence: N/A Staff Attendance: Anne Boykin, Heritage Programs Coordinator Visitors: N/A Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Earl Apgar at 4:03 p.m. Agenda Item #2-3: Hear Visitors: N/A Agenda Item #4: Possible action and discussion on absence requests. N/A Agenda Item #5: Possible action and discussion to approve meeting minutes of regular meeting of March 1, 2010. Minutes were approved as written. (LH/lv) Agenda Item #6: Possible action and discussion on Texas Historical Commission Conference in Houston from April 22 – 24, 2010. It was decided that under the current budget constraints, we would not attend this year. Agenda Item #7: Report from HPC Chairperson. Earl Apgar reported on his quest for an explanation of the 5% budget cuts in PARD. He received assurance from Jeff Kersten, Finance Director, that the Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series budget was “reinstated” in the Heritage Programs budget. Earl asked Anne to seek this promise in writing. If necessary, the HPC will be present at a future council budget workshop as a show of support for the program. Agenda Item #8: Report from Heritage Programs Coordinator. Anne B. reported on the progress of the Lynn Stuart Pathway panels. They are to be delivered by Thursday, April 8 and possibly installed by the following week. She also mentioned that Wednesday, April 21, will be a busy day with the Open City of College Station Historic Preservation Committee 4/5/2010 House at the Lynn Stuart Pathway beginning at 10am and the Exploring History Lunch Lecture to follow at 11:30am. Agenda Item #9: Report on 75th Anniversary meeting. The second meeting of the planning committee will be held on Friday, April 9th at 8am at the Conference Center. Agenda Item #10: Possible action and discussion on Pike National Historic Trail Association request for council resolution. Susan Irza will begin drafting a resolution for the city council to read in support of the efforts of the Pike National Historic Trail Association. It was noted that Zebulon Pike camped along the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail on June 18, 1807. Agenda Item #10: Committee Reports: • Development – Susan Irza Susan reported on the installation of the mini-exhibit at the Ringer Library featuring the Mayor Larry Ringer panel from the previous “Honoring Our Mayors” exhibit along with various documents from the Heritage Programs archives. This will be a good opportunity for us to keep recycling portions of our exhibits. Susan suggested we look into setting up a similar opportunity with the Bryan Public Library. • Native American Interpretive Path – Ernie Wright No report at this time. • Historic Markers Program – Meredith Waller The garden & historic home tour was tabled until a later date due to the Heritage Homes Tour and Derby Day conflicts. Meredith also reported that there is a marker application in the works from one of her neighbors. Anne B. reported that she has notified Mr. Habib that his application has been lost and has asked him to resubmit his application. • Oral History Project – Lou Hodges Lou reported that he was able to fulfill a request for a history of lawn mowing practices by pulling information from the Memory Lane History Project. He is continuing to scan the A&M scrapbook but it is a very slow process. • PR/Communications/Sponsorships – James McGinnis James was not present. • Landmark Commission (Liaison) – Hillary Jessup Hillary reported that there will be a meeting of the commission with training by Quimby-McCoy on May 3. • Educational Initiatives/School Activities – Libby Vastano Libby reported on her Texas Independence Day presentation to the residents at Waldenbrooke Estates. It was very well received. Anne B. reported on her presentation at the Big Band Gala/WWII USO benefit also at Waldenbrooke. It, too, was very successful. • Volunteer Recruitment – Anne Triche-Steen Anne T. will be working on volunteer recruitment for newspaper clipping day to be announced for a day this summer. • Exploring History Lunch Lectures – Earl Apgar See budget discussions under HPC Chair Report.
