The marker will be attached to the wire fence on the West side of Kyle Field. You are all welcome to attend although I am unsure of where to suggest that you park if you do come on campus. Probably the two closest places are the garage in the Koldus Building across from Rudder Tower and the West Campus Garage across the railroad tracks from Kyle field. I will park in my regular spot near the library and walk to Kyle Field. I will look forward to seeing all of you at our meeting on September 12 and will soon be getting out agendas and minutes of the last meeting to all of you. As a heads up for that meeting I hope to be bringing to you or sending to you before the meeting a new marker application for the Bethel Cemetery. You may recall that this subject was considered once before when I was not at the meeting. For some reason the representatives who were present told the person who had written the application narrative but was not present at the meeting that the commission had rejected the application. I indicated that by my records the application was not rejected but rather was sent back for changes to be made. I have informed the author (Pats _Silva] about the changes that now mean they will be applying for an Historic Cemetery designation and that once that is approved they will receive a small medallion and can order a standard subject marker. Van Riper Secretary 2-1 Charles Schultz - END OF WW II PLANNING COMMITTEE Draft funding letter From: Charles Schultz To: BCHC Date: 6/8/2005 4:29:17 PM Subject: END OF WW II PLANNING COMMITTEE Draft funding letter Dear Members of the BCHC, You will hopefully recall that out May meeting I mentioned the request made by the Texas Historical Commission for county CHC's in each county to plan celebrations of the End of World War II on September 2, 2005, the 60th anniversary of the surrender document by the Japanese on the battleship Missouri. I have had a couple of meetings with Katie Elrod of the City of College Station liaison person for the College Historic Preservation Committee and some members of that committee. Today we met with representatives of the George Bush Library about having such an event at the Bush Library on September 3 rather than September 2. One reason for this is that schools in the two cities will be in session on the 2nd. It was felt that such an event should be for the whole family, and that could be more easily done on Saturday than on a school day. At the end of the meeting Katie Elrod asked me to draft a letter to the two cities to seek funding from them for the event. I have attached a copy of my first draft which I have sent to Katie. I recall having mentioned this briefly at our May meeting and sound have sought some sort of formal or informal endorsement from all of you to proceed with it. I did not and apologize for not doing so. I believe that having such an event will be a plus for us in our quest for the DSA for 2005. I am hereby asking you if you would approve contributing perhaps $1000 of the remaining $2,300 in our allocation from Brazos County toward this event. Ann Boykin (the daughter of Calvin and Rosemary Boykin) works for the city of College Station in Katie Elrod's office and has drafted a logo for the event. Some thought is being given to having T -shirts made to sell in advance of the event to help advertise it and to also test the market for possible sales at the event on September 3. Ads will also need to be placed in the Newspaper. As you wills see from the attached draft letter, we are going to ask both Bryan and College Station for funds. If we already have a commitment from Brazos County it should spur the cities to also contribute. We are asking the Bush Library to provide free admission for all people who come as well as for free use of the Rotunda as there is usually a charge for outside groups to use it for events such as the one being planned. I will look forward to hearing back from you on this matter. Charles Paae J Cities of Bryan and College Station Dear City Officials: END OF WW II PLANNING COMMITTEE 1200 GOODE STREET COLLEGE STATION, TX 77840 June 8, 200' World War II officially ended on September 2, 1945 when the Japanese signed a surrender document on the Battleship Missouri. This year is the 60` anniversary of the ending of is considered the greatest war in modern history and perhaps of all time. The Texas Historical Commission has asked the County Historical Commissions in every county in Texas to plan and carry out separate celebrations to commemorate the historic ending of World War II. Representatives of the Brazos County Historical Commission have been meeting with representatives of the College Station Historic Preservation Committee, a small number of veterans groups, and the George Bush Presidential Library to begin plans for an End of World War II ceremony and celebration. We have decided that September 3, 2005 is a better day for a local ceremony at the Bush Library. Preliminary plans call for a short opening ceremony in the Rotunda of the Bush Library followed by an appropriate movie, a panel discussion of veterans and possibly of those who supported the war effort at home, table stations at which veterans and others can display appropriate items from WW II or talk with visitors about recollections of activities during the war, a live band playing 1940's swing music, performance by a swing band group, and an outdoor display of WW II vehicles. In addition hot dogs will be served in the Bush Library rotunda at noon. We write to you to seek financial backing to help provide free admission to the Bush Library for the day, to cover the cost of the hotdogs at lunch, and to pay the swing band and possibly others. We would welcome the opportunity to speak with you about this matter. Because of time restraints we would like to meet with you as soon as possible. Sincerely yours, 1 Dear Community Supporter, The Star of the Republic Museum at Washington -on- the - Brazos is pleased to announce that it will sponsor the inaugural Brazos Valley Regional History Fair (BVRHF) on February 10, 2006. The regional fair will be one step on the road to National History Day competition. After entering their local school history fair, winning students from Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Waller, and Washington Counties may advance to the regional fair. Those winners will compete for advancement to Texas History Day in Austin, sponsored by the Texas State Historical Association and the University of Texas Center for Studies in Texas History. State winners will then travel to the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland, where the top prize is a four -year college scholarship. National History Day is a year -long, non - profit education program dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of history. It helps students develop critical thinking and research skills, and provides an excellent opportunity to master the TAKS Social Studies Objectives. Students choose their own topics of study related to an annual theme, conduct extensive research, and choose the best method for displaying their findings. The theme for 2006 is "Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events." Project categories include: historical paper, exhibit, documentary, performance and interpretive website ( websites are a state level contest only, through 2007). Historical papers and websites must be done individually, but the other categories may be done individually or as a group. A group consists of from two to five students. The junior division competition is for grades 6 -8 and the senior division is for grades 9 -12. All rules and guidelines are mandated by National History Day and can be found at www.nhd.org. BVRHF is unable to reward every student for his or her hard work. We invite your organization to help acknowledge these students by giving an award(s) to a student(s) of your choice, thus enabling more students to receive recognition for their efforts. Special awards can be in the form of cash, certificates, books, T- shirts, plaques, or anything your organization wishes to give. Due to new Homeland Privacy Act Laws, we do not suggest awards requiring the student's social security number (i.e. savings bonds). To ensure that the award is given with thorough consideration, we strongly urge you to select your own judges to choose the winner for your awards. If you are going to award a group entry, please be aware that there may be as many as five students in a group, and each one should be recognized. Special awards will be presented at the Awards Ceremony, which will take place at the conclusion of judging on Friday, February 10` A representative from your organization may present your award to the student(s) of your choice, or you may designate the BVRHF to present your award on your behalf. If you would like to participate, please complete the enclosed form and return it as soon as possible. We will send you a reminder with more details and some last- minute instructions in late January. For further information, contact Anne McGaugh at (936) 878 -2461, ext. 237, or amcgaugh @blinn.edu. I am amazed at how good it looks and how well it works. I hope you feel the same way. Bronius and I developed a plan to solicit input from each of you prior to any official publication. We will try to eliminate any known mistakes and get as many narratives as we have available posted during August. After that phase is completed, we can have an official launch this Fall, hopefully complete with extensive publicity. Please review the website, then forward substantive and technical comments and proposed changes to me in writing by August 1. It would be quite helpful if you could please separate factual errors and spelling errors from electronic issues. I will compile all the comments and then visit with Bronius about things that need to be adjusted. The new website address is: http: / /bchc.co.brazos.tx.us/ I am trying to keep Bronius from being overwhelmed with many separate emails from us suggesting changes, which is why I am asking you to send your specific comments to me. However, if you are inclined to do so, please send Bronius a note telling him what a fabulous job he has done. He did this because he was interested in the project, and in helping us out. It would have been quite easy for him to say he was too busy with other county work to ever get around to our project. Then, we would have been dealing with the FIFTH county employee on this project! Bronius' email is now: bronius.motekaitis @gmail.com Lastly, a big thanks to Doug O'Brien, another County employee, who took Henry Mayo's GPS data and massaged the co- ordinates into the form required to correct the pervasive marker location errors in the THC's Atlas! Thank you so much, Doug! I look forward to hearing your feedback. If you know of someone else who is not on this mailing list who could provide valuable feedback, it is fine to share the address with them, but I would prefer that we have an opportunity to correct errors before you start forwarding the address to members of the general public. I am also purchasing a small cake with a suitable inscription on it and am also planning to have a bowl of punch in the Staff Lounge. I need to send copies of the minutes to a couple of people before we meet in September and cannot distribute such copies before they are approved. Please review the minutes and let me know of any corrections or additions that need to be made. If I have to make any corrections or additions I will sent each of you a message concerning those corrections and additions and ask you if you will approve them. Please read the minutes and get your responses to me as quickly as you can. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter. Sinc-rely yours, Charles R. I believe the current and a past and a future State Regent will be present to participate in the certemony. I expect to attend and hope that others of you will also be able to attend. The ceremony will take place at the site of the marker. It is, I believe, the last of the missing markers, so that when this one is rededicated, all of the original markers should be in place once again. The local DAR chapters are doing the honors and have invited members of the BCHC to attent. They are also inviting the local media to make an appearance. Charles ag Charleq Schultz -May 2006 minutes.doc From: Charles Schultz To: BCHC Subject: May 2006 minutes.doc Dear BCHC members After exchanges of messages and phone conversations with a couple of you concerning the May 2006 minutes drafted by Paul Van Riper but not yet distributed to you, I have made a few changes in the minutes as Paul van Riper initially prepared them. I am now distributing copies in this electronic format to those of you who have email addresses and will send paper copies To those of you who do not use email. The primary concern in the minutes as they were drafted is that they included names of a couple of people who were not present at the May meeting or are not members of the BCHC. As a state mandated commission we are required to abide by the state open records law. Mentioning names or reporting expressions of people not at the meeting in the minutes without approval of those individuals could be a violation of that law. Please get back to me as soon as possible if you see any errors. For those of you using email, simply reply to me with a yes or no indication in your message and include a copy of my message to you. If you note any errors, please note them in the message you send back to me. For those of you who receive paper copies please write yes or no and return the copy to me at the address on the envelope in which you receive the copy. If you note any errors in the minutes, please mark then on your copy and return the copy to me. Please get your vote and report any errors to me as soon as possible, hopefully by August7. The minutes for April 110, 2006 were approved. Under unfinished business nothing new was reported on the TAMU Main Drill Field marker. The Mt. Calvary Cemetery marker will be dedicated May 13. Bids were let this spring on the Memorial for the Providence Missionary Baptist Church and came in much too high; the proposal will be re -bid this next fall. There is nothing new on the Isom Palmer marker. The Chair said he thought the Old Bethel Cemetery had been approved for a marker. Batchelor said there were still decisions to be made before we had a fully operative WEB site. Under new business there were no reports from the Archaeology, Education, or Research Committees. Opersteny reported on phone calls she had received and discussions of the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Board regarding the cutting of trees at the cemetery. It was noted that it is a class C misdemeanor to desecrate a cemetery, but there was no certainty this law applied. After reviewing alternatives and other choices, it was the sense of the meeting that the Commission should take some action. It was then moved by Page, seconded, and approved, that Mayo, acting on behalf of the Commission, write asking the cemetery board to delay any cutting until they have considered the historical nature of the cemetery, have reviewed the legislative guidelines about conserving historical cemeteries, and have solicited inputs from families who have members buried there." I thought that, as the Chair of the CHC, you would be interested a new project we are organizing at the Star of the Republic Museum at Washington on the Brazos, specifically, the Brazos Valley Regional History Fair. This is a regional history fair, set up along the same lines as a science fair, but in the genre of history. Students in grades 6 -12 are encouraged to create a history project to compete in a local school history fair. The top projects will advance to our new regional fair at Washington on the Brazos; the top projects from the regional fair advance to a state competition sponsored by the Texas State Historical Association, and those winners advance to national competition, National History Day, at the University of Maryland. The first place prize at the national level is a four -year college scholarship. The website www.nhd.org has a lot more information about this program, as well as all the rules and guidelines. I have attached a flier with more information. This year I am recruiting student participation from Brazos, Washington, and Grimes Counties, and have some commitment from all 3 counties. The regional fair for our area will be on February 10, 2006. We are currently recruiting some special awards from organizations in the community to encourage more student participation. The organizations can specify which type of project whey would like to recognize, such as the best entry on African American History, or WWII History, or Brazos Valley History, or whatever the organization would like to sponsor. I have also attached an informational letter and a special awards form to this email to give you more information about the special awards. We would be delighted to have the CHC participate in any way, such as sponsoring a special award, or serving as judges on the day of the fair. If you have any questions or would like more details, please give me a call. Sincerely, Anne Anne McGaugh Curator of Education Star of the Republic Museum P. O. Are you using "Track Changes" in word? If you know how to do that, then I think the thing to do is to turn it on, make your corrections or marginal notes, then send me the doc with a new title that says something like Waldrop corrected. Then, I will compare your corrections to the original document, just to make sure about things. If you haven't used "Track Changes" you can try it out by opening Word, going to "Tools" then clicking on "Track Changes." There is a "Track Changes" toolbar you can put up where you can toggle it on and off. It's a great editing tool when you have more than one person working on things. The toolbar has a thing where you can click an icon that looks like a post -it note, then type your note into a space in the margin. That way, I can see your comment or question, right where you want to make it. I'll be interested in knowing if you think this is a good way to proceed. I think it might be the most efficient for all 3 of us, that would save you from having to type separate emails to me enumerating the suggested changes. Thanks again, I REALLY appreciate good editing skills. Under unfinished business the Chair reported that the Drill Field marker is in place, and efforts are being made to schedule a dedication date. It was noted that some work has been done in preparing the site for the Providence Missionary Baptist Church memorial. It was also noted that the marker for Isom Palmer has b ttstaI+ d at his p, v' grave site in the Bryan Cemetery. A dedication ceremony will take place in the near future. The applicants for the Old Bethel Cemetery marker are revising the application to fit the new guidelines for markers. Batchelor reported that the moving of county offices to a new facility had delayed loading information about historical markers to the new county WEB site. J. Schultz led an extended discussion about the fate of the Rock Prairie Church and School. The building and the land on which it is located as well as additional property have been purchased by Weingarten Realty who will construct a large shopping center at that location. That company has offered to give the building and its contents to an interested individual or group, but the cost of moving is sigh to make that practical. v The company has indicated that the historical marker for the church and school will be left at its present site to mark the original location of that historic structure. Under new business it was decided to postpone making recommendations on appointments to the commission until February when more of the continuing members are expected to attend. A commitment was made in 2006 to. contribute funds to the Brazos Valley History Fair to support awards and administrative costs. One proposed member indicated he would volunteer to judge entries. The group also discussed possible ways of inducing the Bryan and College Station Public Schools to encourage their students to participate. There was no report from Archaeology. After an introduction by Randy Haynes, Dr. Robert Johnson of the CRS Center a Texas A &M gave a talk on th local history of the architec- tural firm Caudill Rowlett Scott. CRS began in College Station after World War II, and grew to be the largest architectura firm in the country. CRS's first office was in Southgate with eight founding partners who emphasized the impor- tance of process rather than product and teamwork rather than 'prima donna' archi- tects. CRS was one of the earliest firms to do research and used resources at Texas A &M to do so, becoming known for its expertise on air circulation. H E R I T A G E S O C I E T Y 2007 N O T E S FROM ANNUAL M Several local CRS buildings survive: the Caudill House (Bryan, 1946), Murdock House (Bryan, 1948), Wack House (CS, 1949), Caudill House (CS, 1953), and the County Court House (1956). t In 2006, CRS was named the e "Firm of the Century." Randy closed Dr. Johnson's speech by observing that the Brazos Valley is losing places that are not Victorian houses, stressing that post -war build- ! ings (such as the Caudill House) are important pieces of local heritage too. The minutes of the 2006 An- nual Meeting were approved. We believe that the book will be a good way for the Brazos Heritage Society to introduce itself to more members of the community. The Bra zos Valley Museum is also interested in selling the b ook, and we are currently working on a business proposal for the reprinting. Mrs. van Bavel could not be present at our annual meeting herself but instead sent the following letter about the making of the book. After the letter was read at the meeting, those Society members who were present agreed that it would be a fitting introduction to the reprinted book. 64 REBIRTH O F It is with regret that I can- not personally be present to relate the story of the work that went into the unveiling of the first county seat of Brazos County. I believe as an immigrant, who came to the United States in 1948 with my husband Corne- lius, I ought to give some- thing back for all the free- dom and privileges we have enjoyed in this coun- try. I organized in 1979 a tree planting program to com- memorate the Bicenten- nial Year. It resulted in more than 300 trees • always placed. As I be- came more familiar with the names, I came to the conclusion that I needed to do some research in the archives of the county in the courthouse. There I found a wealth of informa- tion in the deed books and the minutes of the county commissioners meetings. Just how the cemetery was related to Boonville came to light when I found the town site on a large old tax map with the town plan penciled in. We asked a Texas A &M surveying team to fly over the area and make an infrared photo- graph. The old fence lines THE G H planted in Bryan and Col- lege Station. Since my children were leaving home to study and only two of the eight were still at home, I had more time to take on another project to benefit the county. I read an account of the terribly neglected Boon- ville cemetery, where fences were down, cows could walk around and people dumped discarded appliances and other household trash. The County Commissioners were willing to pick up the debris and gave me a small grant to get help from three minority high made it possible to locate the town on a modern map (See page 8 in my book). I spent many hours on my feet, balancing the beautifully written deed books in competition with landmen looking for own- ership of land for oil rights, when oil was found in Brazos County. The pioneers wanted to plant a cash crop and tried to grow cotton, that meant having slaves to work the fields. Slaves were regis- tered in the deeds at hun- dreds of dollars. They were registered by first name, as "William of dark (or light) complexion, in O S T TOWN O F BOON V I L L E school students. It was obvious to me that this was a very historic place but it was not known at first how it was related to the town site. I decided to do some research and place the headstones as far as possible on a map and a numbered file card system. A young mother by the name of Mary Bejin- ski and her three children helped with the registra- tion of the graves. It was hard to make a correct map because there was no pattern to the layout. In 1890 the county com- missioners asked the good health, and a slave for life." An elected officer of the county was paid in land around the square. A Mrs. Millican sold her fa- vorite slave Nancy to her beloved son for $1. Slaves could be sold only. The latter was elected sheriff and being a bachelor needed a woman to cook for prisoners in the jail. The map of Boonville on page 67 was found in the deed books. There was an earlier town plan that was discarded because there were too many lots and not enough land for crops in each. Such town plans came out of books. /7 sheriff to register the graves and to collect money as a fee. I have searched and not found any evidence of a map. In the early years the county commissioners de- cided that the area within a circular road was to be used for whites only. The blacks were to be buried outside of the perimeter. I once received a phone call from a funeral service that someone who had died wanted to be buried next to his brother, but in digging the grave they came twice upon a coffin. Would I please come with my map? This was proof also on the white side stones were not It took me two years to do the research in my spare time. The book was pub- lished in the sesquicenten- nial year celebrating the independence of Texas. The county commissioners reluctantly accepted the public ownership of the cemetery and from then on many improvements were made. Especially Mr. Billie Bird took a great interest and helped to erect the beautiful entrance fence. It is my hope that the ceme- tery will be treasured and maintained for many years to come. We are proud to announce that the "Texas Gypsies" will be performing at our celebration this year. The "Texas Gypsies" is a professional band from the Dallas area that has been given rave reviews by 'The Dallas Morning News" and other sources around the state. The celebration will begin at 9:30am with the flag raising and Pledge of Allegiance lead by the Sojourn- ers. The band will then take the stage at 10:00am with two guitarists, a vio- linist, and a bass player to entertain us with their own style of "acoustic swing." We would like to honor our Veterans from WWII at the celebration and en- courage them to bring any pictures or memorabilia from that time to display on our "Heritage Heroes" table. We will also have crafts, games, and a children's parade to entertain the younger folks. For more information contact Amanda Hermes at 823 -7918. Did you know that one unexpected benefit of using the Dewey Decimal System for state books is browsing assistance? Dewey call numbers arrange contiguous counties together. Therefore, the books for Robertson (976.4239), Madison (976.4237), Burleson (976.4241) and Brazos Counties (976.4242) are shelved near each other. However, that benefit disappears when a book contains information on more than one county. It is also a problem for collections arranged alphabetically by county. The Carnegie has received a Texas atlas showing land owners. Although the only date given is "latest edition ", maps from as early as the 1880's and as late as 1926 are included. The pages are currently being encapsulated so they can be used by the public. Warning, pages are only 12" by 17" so some of the owner's names are nearly impossible to read! We do, however, have magnifying glasses. Nancy McCraw Ross Carnegie Librarian MEET THE NEW CARNEGIE ECHOES B Y N A N C Y R o s s DID Y OU KNOW? I'll correct your email address as soon as I finish this message to you. Thank you for asking about Fran. She keeps active but does not do so with the same energy that she had in the past. The suggestion of everyone introducing themselves at the next meeting is a good one. Please help me remember to do that at the next meeting. Feel free to ask any questions that come to mind at the next meeting and any other meeting. Most of us have been on the commission for so many years that we tend to take it for granted that everyone knows everyone else. Charles 1
