Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Celebrates 113 Years
with Local Historic Marker
On Thursday, July 23, 2009, members of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church,
1216 Detroit, were presented with Historic Building Marker #9 by the City of
College Station and its Historic Preservation Committee. The presentation will
took place at the beginning of the regular City Council meeting at 7:00 p.m. in
Council Chambers at City Hall. The church congregation first met in a brush
arbor on Hope Creek near the Brazos River. In 1910, Rev. G.W. Williams of
Benchley became the pastor. The church was moved to Wellborn where, over
the course of several years, the congregation built three church buildings.
Eventually the church moved to its present location on Detroit Street in College
Station. Extensive improvement and renovations were completed in 1989.
The current pastor is Rev. A.C. Clark III who is following in his father’s footsteps.
