THE AMERICAN MILE 240 Years of History Welcome to the American Mile Historical Walk The American Mile provides an interesting lesson in local, state, national and international history on a specially designed one- mile walking path. Beginning with 1776, the year of America's birth, you will find an engraved band every 20 feet inscribed with significant historical events for that year. When completed, the walk will include events from 1776 through the first half of the 21 st Century. This walk provides a unique educational experience for local residents and visitors to our community. This walk connects to the Lynn Stuart Pathway and the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial located in the park. A volunteer committee of citizens, under the direction of the College Station Historic Preservation Committee, learned much about our history while researching and choosing nearly 700 events for inclusion on the American Mile. The project lasted 8 months and involved the following community members: Thomas H. Taylor, Chair Janette Hedge Julie Schultz Anne Boykin Hillary Jessup Dipankar Sen Calvin C. Boykin William B. Lancaster Betty Stetz Jerry C. Cooper Neal Nutall David Wood Katie Elrod Regina Opersteny Joanna L. Yeager Wm. T. (Bill) Harper Arsenio Rodrigues Lou Zaeske Ann Weaver Hart Richard Carter Oak.
