Heritage Programs recently
awarded two President's
Volunteer Service Awards, a
national honor to recognize
volunteer service.
Barbara Althaus of Bryan
received a gold award for
serving more than 500
hours of volunteer time in
the past year. Althaus
serves on the Brazos
County Historical
Commission, is a member
of Brazos Writers and the
Daughters of the American
Revolution, and writes the
Brazos County Flashbacks
(seen in historic downtown
Bryan).
Most of her recent volun-
teer time has been spent
promoting and researching
the Brazos County
Historical Commission's El
Camino Real Project.
Althaus is also writing a
book about her great uncle,
Dean Kyle, and Kyle Field.
Kyle was on the faculty at
Texas A &M University many
years ago.
The second winner, Robin
Silva, served as a Spc. 6
Senior Operating Room
Technician in the U.S. Army
Medical Field Corps from
1962 -1967, both stateside
and overseas in Germany
and France. She was given
a lifetime achievement
award signifying more than
4,000 hours for her work
with the Veterans Day cele-
brations of 2007 and
2008, serving on the board
of directors of the Museum
of the American G.I., and
her work for
HonortheNames.com,
American Legion Post 159,
14th Armored Division
Association and the George
Bush Presidential Library
Foundation.
VOLUNTEER AWARDS
Both Althaus and Silva
have significantly con-
tributed to College Station's
online historical archives
(http: / /HOLD.cstx.gov).
The awards were present-
ed by Heritage Programs
Coordinator Anne Boykin
during a recent Exploring
History Lunch Lecture
Series at the College
Station Conference Center.
The President's Volunteer
Service Award program was
created in 2003 by
President George Bush. It's
available annually for people
or groups who have demon-

strated exemplary citizen
ship through volunteering
and have met requirements
for the number of hours vol-
unteered, based on age.
