While they cost very little, if installed properly, smoke detectors save thousands of lives each year. The proper placement of smoke detectors is very important. Smoke detectors should be installed in each sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on each additional story of the dwelling unit. The smoke detectors should be installed 3 feet from fresh air vents, ceiling fans, or in very drafty areas. Drafts can blow smoke away from the unit, preventing it from reaching the sensing chamber. The smoke detectors should also be placed so as to avoid the dead air space where the wall meets the ceiling. If the smoke detector is installed on the ceiling it should be placed 4 inches from the wall or corner, and if the smoke detector is installed on the wall it should be 4 inches from the wall/ceiling line, below typical “dead air” spaces. The conferennc also provided the valuable opportunity to refresh relationnship with other planners in Texas and develop contacts in new communities. 2006 Texas APA Conference Molly Hitchcock Participates in Unified Development Ordinance Roundtable Discussion Molly Hitchcock, Planning Administrator, served as a panelist for a Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) roundtable discusssio at the Texas American Planning Association annual meeting in October. The UDO roundtable discussion was designed to allow individuals from communities considering the creation or adoption of a UDO a chance to interact with staff from communities that have a UDO in place. The City of College Station adopted their UDO in June of 2003. Congratulations!!
