HomeMy WebLinkAboutHonoring Our Mayors Exhibit City of College Station City of College Station print | close HONORING OUR MAYORS News Release Media Contact: December 3, 2008 Anne Boykin For Immediate Release 979.764.3491 aboykin@cstx.gov “HONORING OUR MAYORS” An Exhibition in honor of the City of College Station’s 70th Birthday COLLEGE STATION, TX-“Honoring our Mayors”, an exhibition of photographs, original documents and memorabilia, opened today at the College Station Conference Center, 1300 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas. The display features the twelve mayors from former Mayor John H. Binney to our current Mayor Ben White. The exhibition is in honor of College Station’s 70th birthday and will remain on display throughout 2009. Parts of the display will change as new documents and memorabilia are added periodically. Exhibit Highlights: l There have actually been 13 mayors, a baker's dozen, if you count Interim Mayor Fred Brison who served for three months between June and July, 1971. http://www.cstx.gov/templates/printer_version.asp?type=news&page=516&recordid=4326 (1 of 2)12/24/2008 2:13:37 PM City of College Station l First mayor was John H. Binney, 1938-1939. l Longest serving mayor was Ernest K. Langford who served for 24 years not including his three years on the City Council. l Mayor Lynn McIlhaney was our first woman to serve as mayor. She served from 1996 -2002 in addition to serving 13 years, so far, on the City Council. l Original documents in the display: Petition to incorporate, City Charter, city budgets from the early 40s, early annual reports.
