BRAZOS COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION Charles R. Schultz, Chair Henry Mayo, Vice-chair P R E S S R E L E A S E Brazos County Courthouse 1892 -1954 For immediate release May 23, 2008 Brazos
County, Texas – In honor of Historic Preservation Month, the Brazos County Historical Commission is showcasing its new interactive website at BrazosCountyHistory.org. If you've ever
wanted to learn about the rich history of the Brazos Valley, you now have a great resource in this Brazos County Historical Commission website. Primarily developed to educate the public
about historic resources in Brazos County, as well as encourage local historic preservation and heritage tourism, we have included several useful research tools. These include an interactive
map of area historic markers and original research documents ("narratives") submitted to the State of Texas as part of the application to obtain these markers. Until now, these narratives
have been virtually unavailable to the public. The recent addition of the interactive map was made possible by Bronius Motekaitis. The interactive map and marker list include photos
of the markers and some surrounding area as well as any special information you may need to find the marker out in the real world. If available, in the individual marker sections, we
have included the "narratives" mentioned above as PDF documents under the heading, "Narrative/Supportive Research" for easy location. Finally, if there is a particular marker you want
to find which exists somewhere in our county, be sure to check out the Search tool at the top of the site. You can search on any text used in the markers, titles, or other information.

Most photos of historic markers, their current environs and their GPS coordinates were collected by Boy Scout John Mayo. As a part of a community service requirement for rank advancement,
he visited every historic marker in the county with hand-held GPS and digital camera in hand. His grandfather, David Mayo, and father, Henry Mayo, provided transportation and related
assistance. Brazos County then-Webmaster Bronius Motekaitis produced this website with the gentle perseverance of Colleen Batchelor of the Brazos County Historical Commission. Most of
the other photos used in and throughout this website are provided courtesy of the Carnegie Center of Brazos Valley History, Bryan, Texas, which maintains a generous collection of historic
photos from in and around Brazos County. Please enjoy our new website, and be sure to leave feedback with our commission for improvement of this website. We will continue to post historical
narratives as they become available to us and are converted into electronic format. Additionally, the site will be updated as new Texas Historical Markers are dedicated in Brazos County.
