ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENTS
CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS
May 11, 1983
5:30 P.M.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Cook, Members Upham, MacGilvray, Wendt, McGuirk, Meyer
and the Honorable Mayor Gary Halter
MEMBERS ABSENT: Member Wagner
STAFF PRESENT: Zoning Official Kee, Director of Planning Mayo, Planning Technician
Volk and City Attorney Lowell Denton (who presented the legal workshop).
Mayor Halter opened the workshop explaining that public officials are required to take
Oaths of Office, which he then administered to new Members Wendt, McGuirk, ~ Meyer;
also to reappointed Members Cook and MacGilvray. The Mayor also expressed the City's
appreciation to them for their willingness to give of their time and talents to serve
on this most important board.
Each member present introduced himself and gave a brief summary of his professional back-
ground. Chairman Cook then introduced City Attorney Lowell Denton who briefly spoke of
the duties of the Zoning Board of Adjustment, a body which has been created by State Law
and its authorities are given to it by State Law.
• He informed the Board that this board is quasi-judicial and when holding public hearings
the Board owes the people the duty to determine facts and to make policy considerations.
He advised them that the people being heard are entitled to a fair hearing, and then he
read to them the special conditions which must be met prior to granting of variances.
A question and answer session followed, after which the meeting was adjourned.
