HERITAGE PROGRAMS PROGRESS REPORT Public Communications Anne Boykin May 1-31, 2008 EXTERNAL Acquisitions –115 pages scanned Have acquired the personal collection of the Nita & Manning
Smith family. Manning coached the Aggies with Coach Homer Norton. Later, he and Nita became world renowned square and round dance instructors and dancers. Their home is a campus house
once owned by Coach Norton. Contacts -4 Bill McWhorter, THC Military Sites, will be conducting a military sites survey of Brazos Valley which will aid in our “Military History on
Tap in Brazos Valley” historical trail project. Bill McWhorter will be conducting an Oral History workshop for us in March 2009. James Nader, Partners for Sacred Places, has asked
me to present the Project HOLD web site to his board in Austin on August 14. Steve Beachy and Mike Newman will present the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial project before the Exploring
History lecture on October 15. Presentations – 1 Exploring History Lunch Lecture “Eleven Days Days in Hell” by William T. (Bill) Harper brought in over 89 guests. Special guests included
the Oakwood Singers, 40 students from Oakwood Middle School who performed for the lunch group. Research Requests –4 Devon from Freebirds has asked our help in locating photos from
Northgate to use in their 10th birthday celebration of their restaurant. Ann Ganter, CSISD PIO, has asked for our help in identifying long time educators still living who worked for
CISD and/or CSISD. KBTX requested assistance in locating WWII veterans and families who lost loved ones during the war. I referred them to James Boone, James Wade, Cal Boykin and
Joanna Yeager. They conducted extensive interviews with Cal and Joanna. Elizabeth Shadwell requested a definition of our historic areas for use in her real estate office. Publicity

tion. THC Award was publicized in the utility bill insert. THC Award was publicized in “The Medallion” THC Award is now mentioned on our Project HOLD web site. New links
have been added to the Project HOLD web site. Oral History Interviews – 0 Met Sandra Reid, TAMU Press author and winner of the Fehrenbach Book Award at the THC Conference. She is
interested in interviewing Cal Boykin regarding his experience with the TAMU Extension Service and his years with USAID as they pertained to the African American community here and abroad.
The interview would be a good one for Project HOLD files. Publications –0 Historic Markers – 0 Currently, 82 Historic Home Markers, 8 Building Markers and 2 Historic Subject Markers
Marker application for Brian Barrett, 118 Pershing, was vetoed by the HPC. Encouraged Meredith Waller to apply for an historic marker for College Hills Elementary School. Community
Outreach -7 Sponsored the KOR Education School History Scavenger Hunt at the American Mile. We We provided certificates to the students, Texas lapel pins, and cookies. Attended
the ground breaking ceremony of the new College Hills Elementary. Attended the Brazos County Historical Commission meeting. Attended the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial Board.
Presented “Military History on Tap” proposal to the City of Bryan. Gave an interview about PH to Cindy DuBois of Emerald Forest neighborhood for their newsletter. Bruce Forsyth
has asked our help in coordinating the Patriot Day program on Sept. 11, 2008. INTERNAL Intern – 17.75 hours Alyson Sanders has graduated and will not be back as intern. Both TAMU
and SHSU have been approached about filling this position. Volunteers – 5.5 hours Holly Naylor is a new volunteer who will begin scanning in June. Gabriel Copley has left for the
summer. Vicki Eastes is organizing the Norma Miller documents. Brian Langhoff is scanning in the box of newspapers on the Bonfire tragedy and will return this summer to scan again.
Colleen Risinger is scanning in the Brazos Valley Heroes articles among others.. Sarah Sundbeck has left for the summer.
