HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/02/2007 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee Minutes Historic Preservation Committee Monday, April 2, 2007 4pm 2nd Floor Conference Room, City Hall College Station, Texas 77840 Attendance: Marguerite Anthony, Hillary Jessup, Bill Lancaster, Haskell Monroe, Colleen Risinger, Meredith Waller, Ernie Wright, Approved Absence: Jane Hughey, Neal Nutall Absence Approval Pending: Neal Nutall and Jane Hughey (need absence forms for the record) Staff Attendance: Anne Boykin, Historic Preservation Intern; and Peggy Calliham; Interim Neighborhood Services Coordinator Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. Agenda Item #2: Absence Request Marguerite noted that Jane Hughey was ill. Anne noted that Neal Nutall’s wife is ill and scheduled for surgery. Agenda Item #3 & #4: Hear Visitors No visitors were present. Agenda Item #5: Approval of the minutes Haskell Monroe made the motion and Colleen Risinger seconded the approval of the minutes from the March 5, 2007 meeting. The motion passed unanimously. Project updates Agenda Item #6: Exploring History Lunch Lectures Ernie mentioned discussion of promoting Project HOLD during the sign in and luncheon portions of the lectures again. Anne will send a reminder email about the lectures. Greeters for the lectures come from HPC and Senior Advisory. Ernie, Bill, Colleen, Marguerite and Hillary will be greeters for the next lecture. Agenda Item #7 Historic Markers Meredith reported that she, Jane and Hillary will send letters to potential historic marker candidates in the Southside and College Hills Estates areas. These letters will encourage the home owner to apply for a historic marker, and will include a brochure explaining the marker program and an application." Peggy reported that the City Council has requested an update on the Historic Marker program. The HPC will present the report at the May 24 City Council. Peggy also requested that the HPC members be present at this workshop. Peggy is also looking for the original policy that outlined the parameters for historic markers. Anne will email updated marker brochure to Hillary, Jane and Meredith for their approval. Agenda Item #8 Oral History Project Discussions were held mentioning several names for the prospective interview list: Mary Bolton Echols, black community members on campus, Bill Hensel, George Boyett, Sarah June Goode, Nelda Green, Irma Walker, etc. An oral history workshop and lunch will be held on April 20, 11 am – 1 pm, location to be determined. Agenda Item # 9: Project HOLD In the interest of time, Anne referred the members to the Project HOLD Progress Report included in their packets. She highlighted the upcoming exhibits and the new volunteers. Peggy will call Tom Taylor and Steve Beachy to verify who has worked on the American Mile Committee. Agenda Item #10 May as National Historic Preservation Month Peggy, Jane and Marguerite are making plans to promote College Station history through radio spots, PSAs on Ch. 19 and KAMU, distributing brochures at the American Mile dedication, articles in The Eagle, slides on Ch. 19. Agenda Item # 11: Historic Districts Peggy reported that Nancy McCoy, of Quimby-McCoy, estimates that the survey will cost approximately $157,000. The City Manager and Finance offices will meet to determine if this is feasible. Agenda Item #12: HPC Report to Council Peggy reported that we are good to go with the report except for the update of historic markers. Agenda Item #13: Planning & Development Services Director Search Hillary reported that she served on the committee. She also circulated the brochure that was used to promote prospective interviewees. Agenda Item # 14: Committee Calendar April 18, 2007 Lunch Lecture/History of TAMU Vet School April 27, 2007 American Mile Dedication*, 12 noon *At least 4-5 members agreed to be present at the dedication and will hand out brochures for the HPC projects.
