Agenda Item #1: Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 4:08 p.m. Agenda Item #2: Absence Request Hillary reminded the group that Marguerite Anthony's absence was approved in December for both December and January due to family illness. Agenda Item #3: Hear Visitors There were no visitors. Agenda Item #4: Approval of the minutes Haskell Monroe made the motion and Ernie Wright seconded the approval of the minutes from the December 11, 2006 meeting. The motion passed unanimously. Agenda Item #5: Report on Public Relations Planning The topic of Public Relations planning was tabled from the December meeting. A format of a Public Relations planning worksheet was provided by Peggy. She suggested that this format might be used for future individual projects or for an overall program to be sure that everyone agrees upon the goal of the project, the message to be delivered and to what audience. It also allows for assignment of responsibility, a timeline and budget for promoting projects. Hillary suggested that each committee might use this planning format to determine how we want to publicize. The historic markers project might benefit from using this format. Project updates Agenda Item #6 Exploring History Lunch Lectures Next lecture is scheduled for January 24, on the Millican Riots. It will be presented by Dr. James Smallwood of the East Texas Historical Commission. Anne will reprint the newsletter on the Millican riots for this lecture. Becky might want a copy of this to provide to the media. Peggy asked to confirm the group's wishes for future lunch lecture speakers. She had spoken with Jeff Carroll, a Texas History teacher at Blinn, whom Katie had previously contacted. He is very willing to present on February 21 and develop a topic that would work for this group. Ernie stated that he knows Jeff and he is very entertaining and would be a good speaker. Ernie also asked if we had told Jeff he could sell his books. That topic was never discussed; however the group felt that it would be okay for those speakers who have books, to sell them at the lectures. Ernie agreed to re-contact Jeff and determine a topic and confirm the speaking engagement. Bill and Mary Lancaster had been tentatively on the lecture list for March 21, with the topic of The Evolution of Student Housing. However Bill indicated, though they did want to put their experiences into some documented form, he did not feel they had enough of the bigger housing picture and they were not really prepared to do something this soon. It was suggested that Ron Blatchley, formerly of Student Affairs, might be a good resource from the standpoint of student housing. It needs further research. Others suggested who might have some information were banker Bookman Peters and developer John Culpepper. Also the heirs of Herschel Burgess, such as Red Cashion might have some information on the topic. Peggy agreed to talk with Ron Blatchley to gather more information. Marci Rodgers has spoken with Richard Adams about April 18 on the topic of the History of the Vet School and that is confirmed. Anne mentioned a gentleman she spoke to at TAMU on the history of the Parks and Recreation Dept. at TAMU who might be a potential speaker. She will have to get the name. And it was suggested that maybe Steve Beachy could go ahead and take the March 21 date and do the Evolution of CS Parks and Recreation. Hillary and Ernie agreed to meet and try to firm up this list of speakers in the next month. Agenda Item #7 Project Hold Anne has been asked to serve on the Brazos County Historical Commission and will be bringing back reports to this committee from that committee in the future. Anne reported that the scanning of items has been a bit slow during December. The Panther Pride exhibit at the conference center has had good response and Rebecca Hankins at the Cushing Library wants to do an oral history with Coach Delly. Haskell suggested we might want to call upon Fran (Miss Dixie) and Charles Lamb and find out more about what they are doing. They are on the radio and have a one minute item. Rebecca Hankins also wants to partner with Project Hold and linking the sites in the future. Hillary asked that Anne keep Bill and Haskell in the loop on this because they are working on the oral history project. Mary Hamlin has done an oral history with Nell and Willie Pruitt and we now have that. Agenda Item # 8: Committee Calendars January13, 2007, 6:30PM -Martin Luther King Celebration at Lincoln Center January 24, 2007, Exploring History Lunch Lecture, College Station Conference Center. February 5, 2007 Next HPC Meeting, 2nd Floor City Hall March 2, 2007 Dedication of Veterans Memorial/American Mile Olivia Burnside suggested committee might want to tie with another activity such as Sparktacular and/or Earth Day which alternates cities and has a tremendous crowd. Marguerite had also sent a note stating that perhaps the committee could make a stronger impact in March than in May by working with the Parks and Recreation Department on the American Mile. Agenda Item #9: Other business Anne's 40th high school reunion will be held in July 2007. Anne has set aside some time to potentially get these 60's graduates to bring items that might be scanned in for Project Hold. There is not a lot of information that has been saved from the A&M Consolidated elementary schools. Anne asked if the committee would be interested in helping with that scanning if this all works out. The group indicated an interest in helping Anne with this project. Peggy mentioned that her first grade teacher, Mrs. Knowles is still alive and in a nursing home locally. Also that perhaps Mr. Horace Schafer and Mr. Riedel might be able to provide some information. Neal Nutall's neighbor Agnes Baker was a secretary at the high school for many years. Peggy asked Anne if she had ever used some of the cities radio spots to seek information for Project Hold and give a little one minute History of CS while there. Anne said she used that in the past but might look into it further. Hillary briefly went over the results of the Strengths Survey and handed out copies to the group for future reference. She indicated this was a very strong group and very high achievers. Agenda Item #9: Adjourn At 4:55 Bill Lancaster made the motion to adjourn and Jane Hughey seconded the motion.
