Training Room MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Dan Sears,Vice Chairman Wick McKean, Board Members; James Holster, George McLean, Robert Mooney,Bill Lewis, MEMBERS ABSENT: Board Member Jean C.Bailey, Glenn Thomas STAFF PRESENT: Building Official,Lance Simms, Building Technician,Lisa Hankins Building Secretary,Melissa Rodgers AGENDA ITEM NO. 1: Call meeting to order The meeting was called to order by Chairman Dan Sears AGENDA ITEM NO.2: Hear visitors for items not on agenda There were no visitors AGENDA ITEM NO.3: Approve minutes from Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals Meeting on Monday, March 4, 1997. Robert Mooney motioned to accept the minutes,Wick McKean seconded the motion,The Board concurred, (6-0). AGENDA ITEM NO.4: Consider Variance request 97-003 for modification to the 1994 Standard Mechanical Code, Section 504.1., Commercial Hoods."An exhaust hood shall be installed for all conunercial,industrial,institutional and other food heat-processing equipment producing smoke or grease-laden air". Dan asked the building department staff to brief the board on this variance request. At this time, Lance Simms took the floor to explain that this variance request involved a renovation at the third floor of Columbia Medical Center. The plans submitted indicated a"training area"with a fully functioning kitchen. Section 504.1 of the 1994 Standard Mechanical Code requires a commercial exhaust hood system since the building is classified as institutional. CONSTRUCTION BOARD OF ADJUSTMENTS AND APPEALS April 28, 1997 Minutes Lance told the board that the building department staff supported granting the variance and submitted a memo from Fire Marshal,Jon Mies stating the Fire Department supported granting the variance for the following reasons: 1) The stove is to be used for training purposes only in a transitional unit of the hospital. 2) The stove in question would never be used to cook items that produce grease-laden vapors. 3) Staff felt it would be unreasonable and restrictive to require the hospital to meet the requirement for this situation. Dan Sears opened the public meeting At this time,the applicant Garold Smith,Architect for PageSoutherlandPage, took the floor to speak in favor of granting the variance for this project. He verified with the board and the Building Department staff that the stove would be used for training purposes only. Dan closed the public hearing After brief discussion by the board, Wick McKean made a motion to grant the variance request,George Mclean seconded the motion,the board concurred,(6-0).
