Captain Roger M. KiethIy

Roger Kiethly was born and raised
in Missouri. He was appointed to the
U.S. Naval Academy in 1930,
graduating with the class of 1934.
lCdr. Kiethly commissioned the USS
Tilefish at Mare Island in December
1943 and completed four successful
patrols in her. He was awarded the
Navy Cross for his first patrol when he
sank a.destroyer and heavily damag-
ed the Nita Maru off Tokyo Harbor. He
was awarded a second Navy Cross for
the fourth patrol when he sank a heavy
cruiser and two escorts off Hakkaido.
After nine successful patrols in all, he
was promoted to Commander and
transferred to a battleship where he
assumed the duties of Navigator.
Captain Kiethly is survived by his
wife Norgy. His oldest son is also a
Navy captain, presently commanding
a missile cruiser.
