State champion Cubettes put 4 on All-BV team

The Brenham Cubettes left no
doubt that they were the best softball team
in the Brazos Valley this season, lay-
ing claim to the Class 4A state title.
The Cubettes' success on the field is
reflected in The Eagle's 9th Annual
All-Brazos Valley Softball Team, as
four players earned spots on the Field
of Dreams.
The Dandy Dozen was highlighted
by Brenham pitcher Megan Winkel-
mann, who was the Pitcher of the
Year in District 18-4A as well as the
state tournament's Most Valuable
Player.

Long, all of
whom made the
all-tournament
team at state.
While Bren-
ham was the only team to make the state tourna-
ment, several others made the play-
offs, including Franklin, which
placed three player on the first team

Larissa Martin,
first baseman
Kayce Walker
and shortshop
Sara DeStefano,
as the utility
player.
Bryan, which
made it to the Region II quar-
terfinals, placed
shortstop Crys-
tal Saenz and
outfielder Rea-
gan Towell on the team.
A&M Consolidated, which
advanced to the second round of the
playoffs was represented by third
baseman Briana Bishop

Brenham, Franklin place 3 each on elite baseball team

Success in the playoff was the path to The Eagle's 9th Annual All-Bra-
zos Valley Baseball Team, as Brenham and Franklin landed three play-
ers each on the Field of Dreams.
The Dandy Dozen included Brenham's Wiley Crowson, Chris Andreas
and Steven Martin, along with Franklin's Andrew Scheider, Cody Han-
cock and Bryant DeStefano.
Brenham came within on inning of a record 14th trip to the state tour-
nament, falling in the Class 4A regional finals. Franklin made the best
playoff run in school history, reaching the Class 2A regional semifinals.
Cameron advanced to the third round of the Class 3A playoffs and put
two players on the first team, Brandon Kimbrel and T.J. Olivarri.
A&M Consolidated and Bryan landed on player each on the Dandy
Dozen, with Tim Palincsar representing the Tigers and Christ Gilbert
chosen from the Vikings.
The other members of the first team were Dustin Jones of Normangee
and David Doonan of Caldwell.
Brenham's Jim Long was chosen by his peers as Coach of the Year.
Players were nominated for the All-BV teams by their coaches and cho-
sen by The Eagle sports staff.
Senior catcher Crowson batted .421 with 32 runs batted in to anchor a
strong Brenham infield that provided the backbone for The Eagle's top
honor team. Crowson helped the Cubs to a 30-10 record before being elim-
inated by Montgomery in the Region III championship.
The Cubs also placed third baseman Andreas and first baseman Mar-
tin on the Dandy Dozen. Andreas batted .430 with 29 RBIs, while Martin's
.396 average, six homers and 30 RBIs earned him the nod as designated
hitter.
Franklin's contingent was led by two repeat selections to the first team,
pitcher Schneider and outfielder Hancock. They helped the Lions earn
the state's top ranking in the regular season, as Franklin finished with
29-4 record after a heart-breaking loss in extra inning in the third game
of its regional semifinal against New Diana.
Schneider, the Brazos Vally's only first-team all-state selection and 22-
