1. Call meeting to order and consider absence requests.
With a quorum present, the History Preservation Committee Board was called to order at 4 PM
by Chair Gerald Burgner on Monday, June 6th, 2022. Marilyn Maddox requested an absence; all committee members were in favor and voted to approve the request of absence.
2. Hear visitors. Jane Cohen present as a visitor.
2. Agenda Items
3.1 Presentation, discussion, and the possible approval of minutes from the previous
meeting.
Upon a motion made by Shirley Dupriest and a second by Louis Hodges, the Historic Preservation Committee Board voted to approve the minutes as is. The motion carried
unanimously.
A. Cemetery
Sherry Frisk had no update on cemetery.
B. Historical Marker Program
No new applications were submitted to process. Shirley Dupriest expressed that she and her
husband agreed to have their historic marker presented on July 28th as is Patricia Cleere will
have her marker presented. Shirley Dupriest made mention of having QR codes to committee
to provide an app that could provide historic details on houses. Council Linda Harvell stated that it would need to be presented to the city manager and that markers are on project hold.
Discussion would be continued for next HPC meeting.
B. Exploring History Lunch Series
Marilyn Randall mentioned that the previous month of May’s Exploring History luncheon had
greater turnout than usual. She was greatly satisfied with the meeting and suggested to the
committee that more attention and effort be put into providing advertisement in retirement
homes. She mentioned that she would still be needing speakers for the months of November

and December. William Wright suggested a possible history of Christmas in the Park by
Stephen C Beachy for the month of December’s luncheon.
D. McCulloch Neighborhood Interviews Sherry Frisk mentioned speaking with Barbara Moore and will reach out further.
E. 250 Birthday
Visitor Jane Cohen was present and spoke on great success of May 25th event for funding of
the Never Forgotten Veterans Memorial with speaker Roy Mays present, event offered great
coverage to the community. Jane mentioned Mark Beale being present and progression is
going well. Sherry Frisk noted that the video of the presentation was posted to Youtube site.
Also noted were upcoming events for continued funding. A portion of the proceeds from visiting the local restaurant Willie’s on Tuesday June 14th would be donated to the memorial.
Jane Cohen also mentioned a wreath presentation taking place on July 2nd. Sherry Frisk noted
that she would like to reach out to the rotary groups for help.
F. 85th Birthday of City of College Station
Council Linda Harvell noted that short timeline proved to be a push to have committee contact Celia Hernandez to get the event moving forward. Members offered help and suggested
Marilyn Maddox as lead. Louis Hodges also stated that the budget would need to be submitted
quickly for event.
G. American Mile No report to note, Chair Gerald Burgner will be writing a letter to Steve Wright to notify the
committees assistance and partake.
3.2 Presentation and discussion on a report from the Parks and Recreation Director.
Reena Gonzalez was present to share report from the Parks Department. She noted that the
Draft Committee Handbook would be presented and discussed at Council’s meeting on June
9th. Later details would be shared with committee members once approved. Reena notified the
committee that more historic markers had been purchased with the new rate increasing to $500 per marker up from a fee of $310 per marker. Increasing of prices was inevitable as all
costs across the board have been raised. It was noted that the last two remaining markers
#112 and #113 would still be available at the previous rate.
3.3 Presentation of historical items
Louis Hodges brought currency from the era of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that was overprinted for
protection.
4. Adjourn and Closing
William Wright motioned to adjourn the Historic Preservation Committee Board Meeting at 530
PM; Louis Hodges seconded the motion, all carried in a unanimous vote. The next HPC
meeting will be held Monday, July 11, 2022.
