Brymer City Council James Massey Ron Silvia Winnie Garner Dennis Maloney Anne Hazen MINUTES COLLEGE STATION CITY COUNCIL Special Meeting Tuesday, November 2, 2000 at 6:00 p.m. Brazos Center, 3232 Briarcrest Drive Bryan, Texas COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: Mayor McIlhaney, Council members Hazen, Massey, Silvia, Maloney, Garner COUNCILMEMBER ABSENT: Mariott STAFF PRESENT: City Manager Brymer, Assistant to the City Manager Brandenburg, City Attorney Cargill, Jr., City Secretary Hooks, Staff Assistant Tucker This meeting was held jointly with the Bryan City Council and Brazos County Commissioners Court. Mayor McIlhaney called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Councilman Massey made introductory remarks about the process thus far. He stated that the purpose of the joint legislative meetings is to look at common interests and develop cooperative efforts to address the safety, health, and well-being of our community residents. This particular item of interest was derived from discussions held at the Brazos County Health Department board meetings in which officials from the three entities were represented. The Joint Legislative Committee also met to discuss this topic and asked the staff to look at the current ordinances and options available for additional restrictions for no smoking areas in restaurants. This meeting was arranged by the Joint Legislative Committee to allow the entities to hear from the staff and public. Councilman Massey and Councilman Silvia thanked everyone involved in the process. Brooke Brandenburg, Assistant to the City Manager presented a power point presentation that outlined the existing ordinances in both cities relating to smoking in public places and options for ordinance amendments. Council Special Meeting 11/2/00 Page 2 Bryan City Attorney Mike Costentino and College Station City Attorney Harvey Cargill, Jr., made remarks about their respective no smoking ordinances and answered questions from city council members. County Judge Al Jones opened the floor for public comments. Twenty-six members from the audience addressed their concerns in support of or in opposition to the smoking ordinances. No action was taken by the council. Hearing no objection, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m. PASSED AND APPROVED this 14th day of December, 2000.
