HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/07/2022 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE Monday March 7, 2022 Minutes Staff Present: Ana Romero, RECREATION MANAGER; Crystal Garcia, STAFF LIAISON Board Present: Gerald Burgner, Louis Hodges, Sherry Frisk, Thomas Smith, William Wright, Marilyn Randall Council Present: Linda Harvell 1. Call meeting to order and consider absence requests. With a quorum present, the History Preservation Committee Board was called to order at 4PM on Monday March 7, 2022. Marilyn Maddox requested an absence and Tre Watson was an unexcused absence, upon a motion made by Chair Gerald Burger, and a second motion by Louis Hodges the Historic Preservation Board voted to approve the excused absence. The motion carried unanimously. 2. Hear visitors. None present. 3. Agenda Items 3.1 Presentation, discussion, and the possible approval of minutes from the previous meeting. Upon a motion made by William Wright and a second by Louis Hodges, the Historic Preservation Committee Board voted to approve the minutes as written. The motion carried unanimously. A. Cemetery Sherry Frisk discussed the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) results in Salem Cemetery where 54 unmarked graves were found by A&M Professor Mark Everett and his Ph.D. candidate, Michael Martin. Sherry will have to do further research on the missing occupants of Salem and what type of marker would be suitable for honoring them. Council Linda Harvell stressed that paying tribute to them is important. Similar work is being done by many volunteers at the old Canaan Cemetery near the Rellis Campus. Thomas Smith brought up the difficulty of finding the turnoff to the Memorial Cemetery and Field of Honor because no signs are present on Highway 60 nearby. Sherry Frisk volunteered to contact TXDOT about this oversight. B. Historical Marker Program Historical Marker #109 for the Wakefield's’ was presented at Central Parks Dept office on Friday February 25, 2022. Marker #110 by Cleere still on hold for presentation during summer of 2022. William Wright motioned to approve historical marker #111 with a second motion made by Thomas Smith, all in motion. C. Exploring History Lunch Series Marilyn Randall discussed scheduled speakers for History Lunches through October 2022. D. McCullough Meeting regarding McCullough interviews was suggested to be rescheduled by council Linda Harvell. Once completed Sherry Frisk wants them on Project Hold and documented. Discussed involving Barbara Moore and Mark Beal to be the one filming. E. 250 Birthday Jane Cohen not present. Process continuing with architect. Board committee members discussed requesting using J Cody for construction and need for more donations. 3.2 Presentation and discussion on report from the Parks and Recreation Director. Ana Romero reported numbers are increasing for History Lunches and that reminder sent to Colton Koenig regarding reminder for monthly presentations. Ana also discussed Parks Dept would place order for more historical markers and Reena Gonzalez mentioned she would obtain new quote for costs in regards to costs going up. 3.3 Presentation of historic items Louis Hodges brought 1936 Centennial map of Texas. He also had the Houston Chronical from 1962 that had 25 state flags of Texas. 4. Adjourn and Closing Sherry Frisk motioned to adjourn the Historic Preservation Committee Board Meeting at 5PM, Thomas Smith second the motion, all carried in unanimous vote. The next HPC meeting will be held Monday April, 4, 2022.
