This includes the program operated by the City as well as the one operated by the Junior High School. At the present time, it is the only facility available for these programs which are also experiencing growth in numbers. The priority for use of facilities is 1) City operated programs, 2) CSISD programs which are governed by a formal joint use agreement, and 3) other organizations. No additional soccer facilities are planned for the next 3-5 years. Money was approved by the voters of College Station in the 1995 general bond election to acquire a large site (approximately 150 acres) for a new athletic complex. However, there are no funds currently approved to develop that site and additional authorization will be required from the voters and City Council to build any facilities. Future plans for the park include the development of approximately twenty soccer fields along with other athletic facilities once funding is approved. An effort is being made to provide a forum for all organizations that use City facilities. The Parks & Recreation Advisory Board is in the process of implementing a "Sports & Recreation " association that will provide coordination for the various independent athletic organizations and City sponsored leagues. Membership will consist of one representative who is a resident of College Station from each organization that uses City facilities. The intent is to have this association in operation within the next 9 months if approved by the City Council. Thanks, Steve Beachy >>> "Juan E. Vasquez-Ani" <titin100@mail.myriad.net> 02/13/97 04:42am >>> Mr. Beachy: My name is Juan Vasquez, and I am the president of the Aggieland Soccer League, the adult soccer league. I am writing you about the field availability on the Fall of 1997. As you might know the last two years our soccer league has not been allowed to play in the Southwood Athletic Park's soccer fields, and this situation has crated us major problems. The unique situation about Southwood is that they are the "only" lighted soccer fields in Bryan/College Station. If we are allow to play in these soccer fields (like we are allow in our Spring and Summer seasons) we would be able to play at night, and this tremendously helps our schedule. Our soccer league has over 1,100 registered soccer players (both male and female) with over 40 teams and our experience tells us that we will continue to grow. We think that it is unfair that it was simply decided that we were not going to be allowed to play at Southwood in favor of "flag football" without asking our input. Last Fall, I tried to get the use of at least one soccer field at Southwood, but your assistant told me that the decision was already made and it was too late for any changes. Therefore, 1 am let you know about our situation now, so we can hopefully be included in you decisions from now on. Please e-mail me back or call me at 696-1974 so we can discuss this situation. I will wait for you reply. Sincerely, Juan E. Vasquez-Ani CC: SNoe, RPloeger, LWaltman, CBingham, TScazzero, GMa... City of College Station Parks and Recreation Department P. O. The duck population has been significantly reduced since last summer. There are about ten ducks left at the pond at the current time. We plan to remove several more and will continue to monitor them to prevent future problems. A 200' split rail fence was recently installed with the assistance of a volunteer organization along the jogging trail to discourage the creation of new trails through the under growth. Also, limbs and other natural materials were placed on worn areas to further discourage their use by bicycles and pedestrians. This will undoubtedly be an on -going effort. Finally, the chinning bar was moved up to accommodate taller people and a setup bench was added to the site. You expressed interest in lights for the jogging trail during a recent conversation with one of the College Station Police Officers. Neighborhood park lighting was something that was originally proposed for the 1995 General Obligation Bond election. Unfortunately, they were not included in the final recommendation that was submitted by the Citizens Capital Improvement Committee. We will reconsider this issue when the next CIP program is developed. Thank you for your interest in the park system. A 1997 Departmental calendar is enclosed for you convenience.
