Agenda Items 3.1 Presentation, discussion, and possible action on the proposal for a Texas Historical Marker for Parkland Dedication in the City of College Station. • Cemetery Project: Sherry Frisk discussed the overview of an article regarding the Salem cemetery and the image penetrating device used to locate unmarked graves. TAMU Ph.D. students came back to the cemetery for a second time with the GPR device. The group was able to obtain a picture for the paper along with a fantastic article. They will be back tomorrow through Friday to scan the rest of the Salem Cemetery. This is at no cost to the city and could cost up to $5,000 or more to be done professionally. Sherry Frisk is trying to get the students to scan over the Shiloh cemetery and locate unmarked graves. Sherry Frisk wants to put some time of memorial on the unmarked graves, so there is someone buried there. There is no way to identify who is in the grave, but she would like the graves marked in some way to let others know someone is there. Sherry Frisk stated there might be a possibility that the Salem cemetery may revert to its original name of Washington Chapel. She may have more information regarding this during future meetings. • Historical Marker Program: Shirley Dupriest is currently working with a family on a historical marker application. Shirley Dupriest wants to get more exposure out for marker applications. She volunteered to write a blog about historic homes and marker applications. She will get this information over to Ana Romero for review and publication. • Exploring History Lunch Series: The committee discussed having a history lunch in December and agreed it would be on December 15, 2021. It will either be the head of the TAMU singing cadet or the band. Marilyn Randall will get all the information and the speakers for the first three months of 2022 over to Ana Romero for publication. Marilyn Randall suggested that a bulletin email be sent out to seniors at least three times a month regarding the lunch series to remind them. • Removal Process/Protocol for Historic Markers: Ana Romero talked to Leslie and Ian about reviewing the HPC bylaws and seeing if they can add them to the submitted protocol. Ana will bring all the information back to the committee for review and approval once received. • Mccullough (Mcculloch) Neighborhood: Committee members met last week with Barbara Moore and other citizens regarding this project. They want to do oral interviews and get information from individuals and organizations within the neighborhood. It was suggested to host meetings at the Lincoln Center to have these interviews. William Wright suggested creating a pamphlet regarding this neighborhood to include the discussions and information about the neighborhood's history. The purpose of this group is to try and save and record the history of the Mccullough (Mcculloch) Neighborhood. While doing this, they want to move on to other historical neighborhoods and accomplish the same thing. The next zoom meeting regarding this project will be held in October. More information will be provided in the HPC November meeting. • 250th Birthday: The design is still being discussed regarding the Never Forget Garden. All designs are due next week. The monument is estimated at $18,000, and the smaller monument is estimated at $2,000. The number of bricks for the project also depends on the design. The project is estimated to cost around $40,000, depending on the design ideas. Jane Cohen stated that they are currently working on two grants for this project. Linda Harvell would like a presentation to be put together and presented to City Council to let them know what is going on with this project. The committee is aiming for this project to be paid for entirely by grants and donations. • American Mile: Gerald Burgner has not heard anything back from the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, Kelly Kelbly. He will give more information to the committee once received.
